I have been having the same problem with both fans stopping as many others have on my Omen 17-ck2002na laptop. I managed to make do for a month by cranking my fans to a constant 3800. It appeared that the fans would stop once the CPU got close to 90c so manually setting the fan to a high speed kept the temp lower and stopped the fans turning off. But now it doesnt help, the fans just turn off under load and its impossible to do anything heavy on the laptop. I have tried everything possible to fix it including everything suggested on the other posts, I'm using a dual drive dual boot system and the fans stop both on Windows and Linux and even in the boot up if I restart the laptop when hot which results in the 90b error. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the fans themselves and this is obviously not a software issue.

I would like to talk to someone at HP about it but I live in the UK where it seems it's impossible to do without paying.

Hi @xPACx,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

You’ve done a great job troubleshooting so far, and your detailed description really helps narrow this down. The fact that both fans stop under load, even in BIOS and across Windows/Linux, and you get a 90B error on restart strongly suggests this is not a software issue, it’s almost certainly a hardware or firmware-level thermal control fault.

Recommended Steps for OMEN 17 Fan Failure (90B Error)

1. Hard Reset

  • Disconnect the AC adapter and remove any peripherals.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect power and boot up.

2. Update BIOS & OMEN Firmware

  • Go to the HP Drivers page:
    👉 Official HP® Support
    Enter your model OMEN 17-ck2002na.
  • Install the latest BIOS update and OMEN Gaming Hub firmware.
  • Restart and check fan behavior.

3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Power on and press F2 repeatedly → HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run System Tests → Fan Test.
  • If the fan test fails, note the failure ID.

4. If Fans Still Stop

  • This is a known hardware issue on some OMEN models where the fan controller or thermal sensor malfunctions.
  • HP’s official fix is fan assembly replacement or motherboard-level repair.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi, thank you for the reply, and I'm sorry for the delay in responding I've been busy the last few days. Unfortunately I've already tried all of that and it made no difference. Also when testing the fan it completely stopped and my laptop overheated and shut down (I didn't realise the fan had stopped as I was doing other things whilst the test was going).

What do I do about contacting HP to sort this problem out? I live in the UK and the HP contact support page just points to this forum or paying £10 a month.

Thanks again

Paul

Hi Vikram, I have the exact same issue which seems to have been caused by a bios update in Nov, how can I go about contacting HP to

get this resolved?

This is not a EC or Software Issue. I spent many days on this matter and finaly came to a conclusion.
Here is the things i have tried:
- Replacing fans with brand new units.
- Reverting to old BIOS versions with a external chip programmer.

- Testing with Linux and Windows (with & without omen gaming hub and with open source omen specific bios / ec fan controller softwares)

My final observation is:
This is a mosfet solder cracking issue. Which explains why problems increased over time.
Here is what my laptop has been gone through:
"- Firstly, while gaming i experienced the fans rattling (i suspected bearing is gone bad and replaced the fans at this time) and cant change speed as normaly or stuck at same RPM.
-- Which indicates the solder was starting to crack. Thus making the voltage non-stable.

- Secondly, fans started to on and off. In this time period i tried Ubuntu, which i could control the fans and it worked. I could easily get stable RPM for hours.
-- Solder is getting worse.

- Thirdly, i was getting 90B error in the startup and the fans were not booting up. But if started working for once, they kept going strong for a long time. Ubuntu method doesnt work anymore.
-- Solder is gone too bad that it is not stable even if the laptop is cold.

- Lastly and currently, the fans are dead. Almost no booting up. No software can control it."

We believed that is a EC problem because resetting bios worked for a short time. But i can confirm as the solder crack increased this method doesnt work anymore.
I have a Omen 16 2022. Which has the same motherboard type as Omen 17 models. The mosfet is probably a cheap unit with a poorly placed position and with weak solder. Very close to the source of heat. And it is exactly positioned in the WASD keys, the palm area. Which can increase the pressure on that area of the motherboard.

Please try to press the area above the F3 key. This will bend the motherboard (The area is a empty spot where the fan pipes are in there, no motherboard. Which is a very thin place that can disturbute the pressure to the PCB).
The fans will work for a short period of time because it is rejoining the solder cracks. I can confirm this. But if the laptop is hot this is not working (For me). This also explains why the motherboard replacement works but
the issue still arrives after a period of time.

Please spread the word. This is not a software error or a user fault. Just a poorly designed product that is doomed to be broken.  Please file a report to authorities and share the results  publicly so we can do the same thing with stronger evidences.
