OMEN HP 17-GTX 1070 G-SYNC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all

i currently own the OMEN by HP 17-an019na Gaming Laptop - GTX 1070 G-SYNC and was wondering what would be the best possible external monitor to purchase with out comprimising the overall performance of my games ie..response times, resolution etc... the laptop monitor runs nicely at 120hz, would i need a g-sync monitor to match to get identical results

im not looking for a budget one either just wondering if any body has any reccomendations ?

Many Thanks

Tony

Hello @Tonyroon81

It depends on what you want for specs and what games you're playing.

Obviously to take advantage of G-Sync, yes you  will need a G-Sync enabled monitor, NOT Freesync (many have complained of compatibility issues).

Are you playing Triple A games or e-sport?

Assuming "AAA" and the fact its running a GTX 1070, I would not try to push anything over 120Hz to get a decent fps on high settings. The higher the refresh rate, the harder the card has to work, same for higher resolution.

I cannot offer other brands on this forum for obvious reasons, but anything HP will have to offer for gaming monitors will be in the Omen line also.

They offer a nice 144hz monitor at 1080p or a 1440p at 75hz, but unfortunately they are both Freesync enabled.

I do believe HP will be coming out with more updated monitors soon with G-Sync, but have no way of knowing when.

Bottom line, if you are running high end games like BF1 or Assigns Creed, decide if you want High res or High refresh rate.

I would look for 1080P (or "maybe" 1440) and not run it over 120hz max on med to high settings. Anything more will need a GTX 1080ti.

 Just my opinion.

Thanks Photoray002

you`ve also answered my second question, Freesync from amd compatible ? i was looking at the

OMEN by HP 32 Quad-HD (32") LED Gaming Display

there are far more of these freesync on the market than the g-sync... still if there are know compatability issues its not worth the investment.. 😞

my game libary mostly consists of triple aaa games like, COD, Wolfenstein and BF1 and all function at about 120HZ on high settings without compriising framerate ( still not the highest settings), havnt even pushed the ultra settings as of yet...

so it might be worth me holding out for HP to release a g-sync monitor?

Thanks again

Yes BF1 will work on lower settings at 120hz. But if you want a buttery smooth experience, probably not going to happen on a 1070 at Ultra. The Minimums count as much as the Averages do.

IF you are wanting an Omen monitor, ya you will probably have to hold out for a while. Or go with another brand.

HP has a couple at the moment but they are beasts that really need a high end desktop to run them and to me, if Im not going to be able to utilize their full potential, its not worth the high price of the monitor.

Freesync was used on a lot of brands with higher refresh rates because AMD freesync is so much cheaper that what nvidia charges for G-Sync. Just how it is.  😞
