Camera doesn't appear in Device Manager in my HP Victus 15, which I believe doesn't have a camera kill Switch

Hi @asdkjas,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Good call checking in on this — and you’re right, your Victus by HP 15.6" Gaming Laptop 15-fa1000 (771S7AV) doesn’t have a physical camera kill switch or privacy shutter like some other HP models. If the camera isn’t appearing in Device Manager, it suggests either a hardware detection issue or a driver problem.

1️. Check the Camera in BIOS (UEFI)

Sometimes the camera can be disabled at the firmware level.

  • Restart the laptop
  • Immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears
  • Press F10 to enter BIOS Setup
  • Look for Device Configurations or Built-in Device Options
  • Check if there’s an option to enable/disable the integrated camera
  • If it exists, make sure it’s enabled
  • Save and exit

2️. Check Hidden Devices in Device Manager

It might be listed but hidden:

  • Press Win + X → Device Manager
  • Click View > Show hidden devices
  • Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Universal Serial Bus controllers
  • See if anything shows up there (even grayed out)

3️. Run Windows Hardware Troubleshooter

Windows 11 removed the old troubleshooter interface, but you can still trigger it:

  • Open Command Prompt (Admin)
  • Type: msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic
  • Press Enter
  • Run the troubleshooter and follow the instructions

4. Check Windows Privacy Settings

Make sure camera access isn’t being blocked:

  • Settings > Privacy & security > Camera
  • Make sure Camera access is On
  • Make sure apps are allowed to use the camera

5. Install HP Drivers and BIOS Updates

Sometimes the camera won’t show up until the chipset or BIOS is updated.

Restart after installation.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
