My camera is not working. It may be blocked or a button may need to be pushed. Where is the button?

Hi @kchetah
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thanks for explaining the issue. If your HP laptop camera isn’t working and you suspect it may be blocked or disabled by a physical switch or button, here’s how to locate and check it:
Step 1: Check for a Physical Webcam Switch or Shutter
Some HP laptops include a privacy switch or shutter that physically disables the camera:
Location:
- It may be on the left or right edge of the laptop
- Or directly next to the camera lens at the top of the screen
- Look for a small slider or camera icon
How to Use:
- Slide the switch away from the icon to enable the camera
- If there’s a light next to the camera, it should turn off when the camera is active
More details are available on this HP Support page
Step 2: Check for a Webcam Shutter Key
Some models use a keyboard shortcut to toggle the camera:
- Look at the function keys (F1–F12) at the top of your keyboard
- Find a key with a camera icon — often it's F8 or F10
- Press that key, possibly with Fn (Function) held down
If your laptop has this feature, pressing the key should enable or disable the camera.
More guidance is available in this camera troubleshooting guide
Step 3: Check Windows Camera Settings
If no physical switch or key is found:
- Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera
- Make sure Camera access is turned on for the device and apps
- Restart the laptop and test the camera using the built-in Camera app
Let me know your exact HP model if you’d like help identifying the correct switch or key location.
If my response helped, please mark it as an Accepted Solution! ✅ It helps others and spreads support. 💙 Also, tapping "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" makes a big difference! Thanks! 😊
Take care, and have an amazing day!
