BTW... if your gaming, the games wont actually play any different on the SSD over HDD.

But the LOAD times will be a lot faster.

You can install games to the Storage HDD to save space, but you will be right back to the slowness of HDD load times again.

If you want the games to load fast, install them to the SSD.

But do note that a "250 GB SSD" will fill up fast when installing several games. Go for as big a drive as you can afford.

HP uses few suppliers and depending on available stock, this can be one or another. Please use the following vendor

    http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP---Compaq/hp-omen-17-an000-cto

They say "These upgrades are guaranteed compatible when you order from Crucial.com".

Regards.

Will I still be able to have my 1 TB drive or will I need to remove it to install this (Crucial MX500 500GB SATA 2.5-inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal SSD) drive?

I guess the real question is can I have both?

with that setup no you will lose your 1tb hd . do you already have the m.2 slot filled ? if not go with a nvme m.2 ssd will be alot faster and you can keep your 1tb hd

Well part of my problem is that I have not had the opportunity to open my Omen 17T AN000 so I don't know what it has for available drive slots.  I bought it last week and had problems with it when I turned t on the first time so I had to ship it back to HP. They are repairing it and sending it back, but I wanted to get an SSD drive to put in it when it arrives.  I see a lot of OMEN 17T AN000's configured with 256 or 512 SSD drives but I don't now what is the correct part to buy.

So based on your comment I assume I can get this: Crucial MX500 500GB M.2 Type 2280 Internal SSD  right?

The link Banhien gave you for the Crucial drives will all be compatible parts. Crucial is a reputable company and backs up their products.

Yes that 500 GB M.2 sata drive will work.

Also, here is the manual for your model. Page 44 for the M.2 drive...

Okay great, so my last question: I see that there is a difference between the Crucial drive read write speed number and the OEM speed number. I would assume the OEM drive is faster, and them when I look at the Samsung 960 EVO Series it have an even higher read speed number.

Is there a point where the laptop itself will not read any faster and thus a waist of money to go beyond, say the OEM 2280, the Samsung has a read of 3200?

Good question. What you probably are seeing is the read/write speed differences between an M.2 Sata and M.2 NVMe drives. Roughly speaking, the 500 MB rating being associated with the Sata drives and 3200 MB with NVMe.

Sata SSD's are roughly 5 times faster than a mechanical hard drive (HDD). NVMe SSD's are roughly 5 times faster than Sata SSD's.

You will see a big difference in benchmarks between all of them. But to the naked eye, you will really only feel a big difference between the HDD and Sata SSD. Once you go to NVMe, the difference between SSD's becomes not so obvious for general usage.

Generally speaking: My rule of thumb is, unless you have specific needs that require the speed of an NVMe drive, save your money and go with the M.2 Sata version.

The difference in speed between M.2 Sata SSD brands will be negligible, whether it be an OEM or Consumer model.

But, if it happens that you stumble upon a deal that makes the NVMe really inexpensive, then go for that one.
