I have a victus laptop and when it is inactive for five minutes (on battery) the display turns off which is good. But it is also supposed to dim the brightness at 4 minutes so i know that it will turn off the screen soon. Does anyone have the same problem or can offer a solution?

Hi @Helen00,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
The issue you're experiencing with your Victus by HP 16.1 Inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-E0000 (2V8Z8AV), where the screen does not dim before turning off, can often be adjusted through the power settings in Windows. Here’s how to ensure that the display dims before turning off when on battery:
Adjust Power Settings
Open Power & Sleep Settings:
- Press Win + I to open the Settings app.
- Go to System > Power & sleep.
Change Power Plan Settings:
- Click on Additional power settings under the Related settings section on the right.
- This will open the Power Options in the Control Panel.
Edit Power Plan:
- Click on Change plan settings next to the power plan you are currently using (usually Balanced).
- Click on Change advanced power settings.
Adjust Display Settings:
- In the Power Options dialog box, expand the Display section.
- Expand Dim display after.
- Set the On battery time to 4 minutes or your preferred time before the screen turns off.
- Make sure the Turn off display after setting is 1 minute later than the Dim display after setting (e.g., 5 minutes for the display off).
Verify Settings in Windows Registry
If the above steps don't work, there might be an issue with the registry settings related to power management. Be cautious when modifying the registry.
Open Registry Editor:
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type regedit and press Enter.
Navigate to the Power Settings:
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings.
Find the Display Dim Settings:
- Within the PowerSettings key, look for subkeys related to display dim settings. The exact key names can vary, but look for ones that contain Display or Dim.
Modify the Registry Values:
- Ensure the values for DCSettingIndex (on battery) are set correctly to reflect the 4-minute dim time.
Reset and Reapply Power Plan
Sometimes, resetting and reapplying power plans can resolve anomalies.
Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
- Press Win + X and select Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
Reset Power Plans:
- Type powercfg -restoredefaultschemes and press Enter. This will reset all power plans to their default settings.
Reconfigure Power Settings:
- Go back to the Power & sleep settings and configure the dim and turn-off times again as described in the first section.
Kindly find the next set of steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
