Hi,

I understand that the windows key gets locked automatically, and you have to manually press fn+F12 to unlock it.
However is there a way to stop the windows key from getting locked alltogether?

I use my gaming laptop for some heavy lifting technical work, and not so much for gaming. So for my personal use, having the windows key enabled makes a lot more sense.

Thanks!

Hey there! @Whooptiewhoop, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Community!

For this method, you will need to use a user account with Administrator privilege, because Standard user account is not allowed to do any system changes.

Do a registry backup on the PC before trying out the steps.

To completely disable the Windows key, follow these steps:

Open regedit.
On the Windows menu, click HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE on Local Machine.
Double-click the System\CurrentControlSet\Control folder, and then click the Keyboard Layout folder.
On the Edit menu, click Add Value, type in Scancode Map, click REG_BINARY as the Data Type, and then click OK.
Type 00000000000000000300000000005BE000005CE000000000 in the Data field, and then click OK.
Close Registry Editor and restart the computer.

To enable the Windows key, follow these steps:

Open regedit.
On the Windows menu, click HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE on Local Machine.
Double-click the System\CurrentControlSet\Control folder, and then click the Keyboard Layout folder.
Right-click the Scancode Map registry entry, and then click Delete. Click Yes.
Close Registry Editor and restart the computer.

Let me know if this helps!

Have a great day! 🙂
