Hi @Abitj,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP laptop display flickers for a second when plugging in or unplugging the charger. Let’s go through a few points to understand and address this.

Reason for flickering
This is usually caused by power state changes. When the laptop switches between battery power and AC power, Windows can adjust refresh rate, GPU settings, or screen brightness briefly, which causes a momentary flicker.
In most cases, this is normal behavior and not a hardware fault.

Check display drivers
Open Device Manager → Display adapters, and ensure you have the latest Intel or NVIDIA/AMD graphics drivers installed from HP’s support site.
Outdated or generic drivers can make flickering more noticeable.

Check refresh rate and power settings
Go to Settings → System → Display → Advanced display and note the refresh rate.
Also, in Control Panel → Power Options, check that your “Plugged in” and “On battery” plans don’t have drastically different display brightness or GPU performance settings.
Set “Adaptive brightness” off if enabled.

Check GPU switching (if dual graphics)
If your laptop has both integrated and discrete GPUs, Windows may switch GPUs when the power source changes.
Make sure graphics switching settings in BIOS or NVIDIA/AMD control panel are configured properly.

Perform a power reset
Shut down the laptop, unplug the charger, remove the battery if possible, and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.
Reconnect everything and power on — this can clear temporary power/flicker issues.

Test for persistent flicker
If the flicker only occurs for a brief second during plug/unplug and the display works normally otherwise, it is not critical.
If it continues randomly during normal use, further hardware checks may be needed.

I hope this helps.
