Hello,

I bought this computer back in August of 2022 for college. Few days ago it wouldn’t charge and a friend as informed me my battery has failed. I no longer have warranty and my friend is suggesting I send it in or buy a new one.

However I find it odd the battery died after only 3 years. What can I do? I can’t  afford a new computer and I have classes this semester.

Hello @Emily20261 ,

Welcome to HP Support Community!

If we had the exact laptop model we could have provided better guidance according to the model.

If you're experiencing early battery failure with your HP device, here are some steps and considerations to help diagnose and potentially resolve the issue:

Steps to Address Early Battery Failure

  1. Battery Health Check:

    • Use HP Support Assistant to run a battery health check. This tool can give you a status report on your battery's health and performance.
    • Navigate to the "Battery" section within the HP Support Assistant and follow the prompts for a diagnostic test.
  2. Update System Software:

    • Ensure that your operating system and all relevant drivers are up to date. Sometimes battery problems can be improved with software updates.
    • Check for BIOS and firmware updates as they can contain fixes related to power management.
  3. Perform a Hard Reset:

    • Shut down your device.
    • Disconnect the charger, remove the battery (if removable), and press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
    • Reinsert the battery, connect the charger, and turn on the device.
  4. Battery Calibration:

    • Calibrate your battery to ensure it accurately reports its charge level. This involves full charging and discharging cycles.
    • Fully charge the battery, then unplug and use the device until the battery is completely drained and the device shuts off. Recharge it fully again without interruption.
  5. Power Settings Adjustment:

    • Adjust your device's power settings to optimize for battery life. This includes reducing screen brightness, disabling unnecessary services, and using power-saving modes.
  6. Battery Care Tips:

    • Avoid extreme temperatures, as they can negatively impact battery performance.
    • Try not to let the battery drain completely before recharging, if possible.

Contact HP Support

  • If the above steps do not resolve the issue or if your battery still fails prematurely, it might be necessary to contact HP support for further assistance or consider replacing the battery if it's under warranty.

Battery Replacement

  • If your battery is confirmed to be faulty, you may need to get a replacement. Make sure to use batteries from HP or authorized parts suppliers to ensure compatibility and safety.

If the issue persists and is under warranty, reach out to HP for a potential repair or replacement.

For more detailed assistance, please refer to HP's support resources with your specific device model information.
