HP Omen 16-xd0017ax Gaming Laptop
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi, I bought an HP Omen 16-xd0017ax Gaming Laptop, but I'm having internet connection issues on ethernet. Wi-Fi is working fine, but ethernet is not working correctly.

Like on internet speed tests I'm getting 60 Mbps on WiFi but on Ethernet I'm getting only 8-10 Mbps, which doesn't look right. It's not the ethernet cable because I have tested the ethernet cable on two other laptops and I'm getting 75-80 Mbps on ethernet on those laptops.

I tried with a different ethernet cable but in that case ethernet won't even connect to internet. It's just like the ethernet cable that I was using for past 1 year is only one cable seems to work with my HP Omen which is very weird.

This problem was not even there when I first bought the laptop, it started some 2 weeks ago.

Ethernet Adapter - Realtek GBe Family Controller

[ This is just what I could see in Device Manager ]

I bought this laptop for the sole purpose of gaming but I can't because of ethernet low speeds. Please help!

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi @Avion19

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

Here's a more concise version of the troubleshooting steps for your ethernet issue on the HP Omen 16-xd0017ax:

1. Update or Reinstall Network Driver:

  • Open Device ManagerNetwork adapters → Right-click Realtek GBE Family ControllerUpdate driver or Uninstall → Restart to reinstall.

2. Check Ethernet Adapter Settings:

  • Right-click Realtek GBE Family Controller in Device Manager → PropertiesAdvanced tab → Set Speed & Duplex to 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex.

3. Disable Power Saving:

  • In Device Manager → Right-click Realtek GBE Family ControllerPropertiesPower Management → Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

4. Reset TCP/IP Stack:

  • Open Command Prompt (Admin) → Type netsh int ip reset → Press Enter.
  • Then type ipconfig /release → ipconfig /renew → ipconfig /flushdns → Press Enter.

5. Test with Different Cable/Port:

  • Test another ethernet cable or connect to a different port on the router.

6. Test on Another Network:

  • Try connecting to a different router or network to rule out a network issue.

7. Disable VPN/Security Software:

  • Temporarily disable any VPN or third-party security software that might be interfering.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Dear Raj,

Thank you so much for your prompt and thoughtful assistance regarding my slow Ethernet internet issue.

Your insights were incredibly helpful in guiding my troubleshooting process. Although the issue was not resolved with your initial suggestions, I later discovered that the root cause was a hardware problem—specifically, a damaged RJ45 connector on my laptop that only has 7 pins instead of the required 8.

Your guidance was crucial in eliminating potential software and driver issues, leading me to identify the true cause. I sincerely appreciate your support.

I have a follow-up question: Is it even possible to replace an RJ45 connector on a laptop? Your expertise would be greatly valued.

Warm regards,

Avion

Hi @Avion19

Welcome to the HP support community.

Thank you for the update and i really appriciate you isolating the issue.

Replacing an RJ45 Ethernet port (connector) on a laptop, such as the HP Omen 16-xd0017ax, is theoretically possible but generally not practical for most users. Here’s why:

1. Integrated Design:

  • Most modern laptops, including gaming models like the HP Omen series, have the RJ45 Ethernet connector integrated directly into the motherboard. This means the Ethernet port is soldered or permanently attached to the internal circuitry.

2. Complexity of Repair:

  • Replacing an RJ45 port involves desoldering the old connector from the motherboard and soldering a new one in place. This requires advanced skills in electronics repair and specialized equipment like a soldering iron, soldering braid, and a steady hand to avoid damaging other components on the motherboard.
  • For someone without experience, there is a risk of causing more damage to the motherboard, which can lead to expensive repairs or a completely unusable laptop.

3. Alternative Options:

  • USB to Ethernet Adapter: If the RJ45 port is malfunctioning, an easier solution might be to use a USB to Ethernet adapter. These adapters plug into the laptop’s USB port and provide a functional Ethernet connection. This is a less invasive, more practical solution for most users.
  • External Docking Stations: Another option is using a docking station that provides Ethernet and other connectivity options. This is especially useful if you need more ports or enhanced functionality.

4. Warranty Concerns:

  • If your laptop is under warranty, attempting to replace or repair internal components yourself could void the warranty. You’d likely need to go through official service channels to get any repair done.

Conclusion:

While replacing the RJ45 connector is technically possible for an experienced technician, it’s not recommended as a DIY repair. If your Ethernet port is broken, your best bet is to either use an external USB-to-Ethernet adapter or contact HP for professional repairs.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
