BIOS Recovery Failure Report

Device Information

  • Model: HP OMEN 16-u1001ne

  • Product Number: 9U2H5EA#ABV

Issue Summary
The laptop experienced a BIOS update/recovery failure and is currently unable to boot normally. The system enters HP BIOS Recovery mode but reports that BIOS recovery files cannot be found or are corrupted.

What happened

  1. The laptop was functioning normally before the BIOS issue occurred.

  2. Created a bootable USB with F.29v of BIOS (previous version F.28)

  3. During the BIOS update/recovery process, the system displayed a white HP BIOS Update screen with "Initializing".

  4. The cooling fan ran at high speed .

  5. And sudden power off and then repeat the same process again and again.

Current Symptoms with out F.29 version of bios on USB

  • Laptop powers on.

  • Cooling fan operates normally.

  • Screen backlight turns on.

  • Display is functional.

  • HP BIOS Recovery screen can be accessed using Windows + B.

  • Windows does not boot.

  • BIOS recovery fails with file corruption/not found errors.

Troubleshooting Performed

  1. Created a BIOS recovery USB using HP's official BIOS package:

    • BIOS Version: F.28 Rev.A

  2. Used HP's BIOS recovery USB creation process.

  3. Attempted BIOS recovery using:

    • Windows + B

    • Windows + V

  4. Performed multiple power resets:

    • Held power button for extended periods.

    • Disconnected AC adapter.

    • Reconnected power and retried recovery.

Additional Notes
The BIOS package used was obtained from HP's official support resources and the recovery USB was created using HP-provided tools.

Hi  @CononZXR,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I hear your concern about   your OMEN laptop stuck in BIOS recovery mode after the update attempt. Thank you for sharing such a detailed description of what happened  that helps a lot in narrowing down the issue.

Could you kindly clarify the below details :

  • When you created the recovery USB, did you format it to FAT32 before copying the BIOS files?
  • Was the USB drive connected directly to the laptop (not through a hub)?
  • Did the recovery attempt show any progress bar before failing, or does it stop immediately with the corruption/not found error?

Here are few  steps you can try:

1.Recreate the BIOS USB:

Use a different USB stick (preferably 16 GB, FAT32 formatted).

Re-download the BIOS package (F.28) from HP’s support website to ensure the file isn’t corrupted.

Use HP’s BIOS Update utility again to create the recovery drive.

2.Use the correct USB port:

Plug the recovery USB into the left-side USB-A port

3.Check BIOS file naming:

On the USB, confirm that the BIOS recovery file is named correctly.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your response.

During the BIOS update attempt, no progress bar appears. It only shows a white BIOS update screen with a center “initializing…” message, then after some time the laptop sudden powers off. This cycle keeps repeating. F.29 is detected, but F.28 is not detected at all.

Recreate the BIOS USB:
I have already tried multiple F.28 BIOS versions, but the USB is still not being detected. It repeatedly shows the error “BIOS file not found.” The USB is formatted correctly in FAT32.

Use the correct USB port:
Yes, I am using the correct USB-A port on the left side of the laptop.

Check BIOS file naming:
I used the official HP BIOS Update Utility, so the USB structure and file naming were created automatically by the tool.

Additionally, I visited an authorized service center today. They suggested it's a motherboard issue. However, the laptop was working perfectly before the BIOS update attempt. The issue started only after the failed update and the system entered recovery mode. I understand BIOS updates may perform hardware checks, but it seems unlikely that a motherboard issue would appear exactly at the same time as the update failure.

They gave me two options: either replace the motherboard or proceed with diagnosis/repair. I am currently considering a third-party repair for further evaluation.

Please let me know if there is any other recovery method or tool I can try before moving forward with a hardware replacement.

One question: is it possible to install BIOS version F.28 or any lower version after a failed attempt to install F.29?

I have tried multiple older versions, but none of them are detected. Only F.29 is being recognized, and when it attempts to proceed, the system shuts down suddenly due to power loss

Hi @CononZXR,

I understand how frustrating this is. Since you’ve already tried BIOS recovery with both F.28 and F.29, and only F.29 is detected but fails, that confirms the firmware chip is corrupted. HP systems don’t support downgrading to older BIOS versions, so recovery with F.28 isn’t possible.

At this point, the only reliable fix is to visit an HP service center or a qualified repair technician.
