I have the same issues as described by MUbaidullah on Jan 22 2025 in thread “BIOS Update to Version: F.30 Not Successful”

My specs are:

System Manufacturer: HP

Windows 11 Pro 25H2 OS build 26200.7462

System Model: Victus by HP 15L Gaming Desktop TG02-0xxx

BIOS: F.15 (type: UEFI)

Processor: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700 (20 CPUs), ~2.1GHz

Memory: 32768MB RAM

In the thread I referenced, above, Raj_05 made various troubleshooting suggestions, the first of which was to check for error codes in Device Manager → Firmware

Firstly, I was not able to find error info in Device Manager → Firmware until I did an internet search and found that I need to go to Device Manager → Firmware → System Firmware and then do right-click Properties.

In Properties the General tab has this ‘Device Status’:

"This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Indicates a revision number encountered or specified is not one known by the service. It may be a more recent revision than the service is aware of."

And in the Events tab the most recent entry is from Feb 2025 even though I attempted the BIOS update today, Dec 20 2025.

My attempted update procedure:

  1. Run Hp Support Assistant

  2. go to Updates

  3. check update for ‘HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 89B5), choose ‘download & install’, and follow instructions on popup app after the Support Assistant downloads the BIOS. Per prompt, restart PC

  4. after reboot check bios version with dxdiag and discover that it is still F.15

  5. run HP Support Assistant, go to Software & Drivers and expand History. There, I see “HP Consumer … BIOS… Failed on: 12/20/2/25. To the left of this entry is an ‘i’ (info) icon, which I click on. The resulting message says, “This package provides an update to the ... BIOS ...Softpaq number sp155207 Version F.30 Size: 14.04 MB” but no error information.

My questions:

1. For the error,  "Indicates a revision number encountered or specified is not one known by the service. It may be a more recent revision than the service is aware of" is there a known workaround?

2. is there more detailed error information available somewhere on my PC for this failed BIOS udpate?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @ElderUser,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Victus 15L Gaming Desktop TG02-0xxx failed to update the BIOS from F.15 to F.30, and you are seeing a Code 10 error in Device Manager for System Firmware. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Confirm current BIOS revision and compatibility
Verify that your system model exactly matches the BIOS update package (ROM Family SSID 89B5).
Mismatched BIOS packages can cause the revision error you’re seeing.

Check HP Support Assistant logs
Open HP Support Assistant → My devices → Updates → History, and click the “i” icon for the failed BIOS update.
Look for log files under C:\ProgramData\HP\PCDr\ or C:\SWSetup\SP155207 (folder may vary by SoftPaq).
These logs sometimes provide more technical error codes.

Try a manual BIOS update

Download the BIOS F.30 directly from HP’s support website for your exact model.

Create a USB flash drive with the BIOS recovery file.

Boot the system and use Windows + V BIOS recovery method to flash from USB.
Manual flashing can bypass SoftPaq installer issues.

Perform a full power reset before updating
Shut down the PC, unplug it, wait 1–2 minutes, then hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.
This clears residual power and may help the firmware accept the new revision.

Temporarily disable security software
Antivirus or Windows security features can sometimes block BIOS updates.
Temporarily disable them while performing the update.

Check for Intel ME and chipset driver updates
Ensure Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) and chipset drivers are up to date.
Outdated drivers can prevent BIOS updates from being applied correctly.

Retry BIOS update in Windows or via USB recovery
After completing the above steps, retry the update.

I hope this helps.

Kuroi_Kenshi, thank you very much for the reply.

Regarding your 'Confirm current BIOS revision and compatibility' advice, I have a couple of questions:

Questions

1. Would the HP Support Assistant attempt to install an incorrect BIOS version?
2. I attempted to follow your advice.  I started by googling:

HP Victus 15L Gaming Desktop TG02 bios hp.com

which took me to https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/victus-by-hp-15l-gaming-desktop-pc-tg02-0000i/2101006741

The pull-down menus do not offer me the appropriate choices, however.  See image, below.  I have Windows Pro 25H2 installed, but the pulldown menu does not offer that version.

Could you please advise me in a detailed manner how I can confirm BIOS compatibility?

Thanks.

Hi @ElderUser,

HP Support Assistant (HPSA) only offers BIOS updates that match:

Your System Model

Your ROM Family / SSID (in your case: 89B5)

Your hardware configuration

However, HPSA does not validate whether Windows can successfully apply the update, only that it is eligible.
So it can attempt a BIOS update that later fails during firmware handoff, which is what you’re seeing.

Your failure is not because the BIOS is “wrong” for your PC, it’s because the update process is failing to transition control to the firmware layer.

HP driver pages:

Do not list every Windows build (like 25H2)

Group support by major OS version only

For your system, you should select:

Windows 11 (64-bit)

Even though you’re on Windows 11 Pro 25H2, the BIOS is OS-agnostic and the same BIOS package applies.

You are on the correct page
You should ignore the missing 25H2 option

Follow these steps exactly:

Confirm your system identifiers

Press Win + R

Type msinfo32 and press Enter

Confirm the following:

System Model: Victus by HP 15L Gaming Desktop TG02-0xxx

BIOS Version: F.15

BIOS Mode: UEFI

BaseBoard Product: 89B5 (or equivalent)

If ROM Family / SSID = 89B5, then F.30 is the correct BIOS.

Download the BIOS manually

Do not rely on HP Support Assistant for this case.

Go to the HP support page you already found

Select:

Windows 11 (64-bit) (ignore build number)

Expand BIOS

Download:

HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 89B5) – F.30

SoftPaq: SP155207

This confirms compatibility 100%.

About the Device Manager → Firmware → Code 10 error

“Indicates a revision number encountered or specified is not one known by the service.”

This error means:

Windows Firmware Interface cannot properly hand off the update to the system firmware

This is commonly caused by Intel ME / firmware handshake issues, not a bad BIOS

That also explains:

Why the BIOS update appears to “run”

Why the system reboots

Why the BIOS version never changes

I hope this helps.

Kurio_Kenshi -

Thank you for your 2nd reply.

If I correctly understand it, my BIOS update problem is a bug in the HP Support Assistant, in that the HPSA does not correctly handle my Windows build.

You suggested:

"For your system, you should select:

Windows 11 (64-bit)"

but that is not one of the options (Please see the screen shot that I posed in my previous reply to you).

Perhaps you meant to write, "For your system you should select any of the Windows 11 64-bit options" ?

Hi @ElderUser,

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for sharing the screenshot and for your detailed clarification. It’s very helpful.

Also, just to clarify, kuroi_Kenshi is not available at the moment, and I (VikramThegreat) am assisting you now.

You are correct in your understanding, and thank you for pointing that out.

Clarification on OS selection

On the HP Software & Drivers page for your Victus desktop:

  • In Step 1 (Identify and select OS), please select Windows 11 (this is correct, as shown on the right side in your screenshot).
  • In Step 2 (Select the version), you can select any of the Windows 11 64-bit versions that match your installed build (for example: 22H2, 23H2, or 24H2).

HP does not list a generic “Windows 11 (64-bit)” option separately. Selecting the correct Windows 11 version (64-bit) ensures the page loads all compatible drivers, including the BIOS, regardless of whether you install them manually or via HP Support Assistant.

Important note about BIOS updates

  • BIOS files are not tied to a specific Windows feature update.
  • Once Windows 11 is selected correctly, the latest BIOS available for your model will still appear, even if HPSA does not automatically prompt it.
  • If HPSA is not detecting it, downloading and installing the BIOS manually from this page is the recommended and reliable method.

You’re absolutely right to question this, and your interpretation is spot-on. Please proceed by selecting Windows 11 + the closest matching 64-bit version, and you should see the correct BIOS listed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
