I checked the warranty status of my computer and it ran out in September of 2018. So without a valid warranty I’m wondering what my course of action should be going forward...

Hi:

The Short DST failure means the hard drive needs to be replaced and the operating system reinstalled.

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.

You may want to consider replacing the mechanical hard drive with a better performing, normally more durable 2.5" solid state drive (SSD).

After you replace the drive, you can reinstall W10 by making a bootable recovery drive using the HP cloud recovery client tool.

Here is a link for how to use that utility...

Could you please provide a link to the product you recommend to get?

Thank you

I personally have this drive in one of my PC's.

I love it.

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra-NAND-500GB-Internal/dp/B072R78B6Q

The above link is for the 500 GB model.

At the 1 TB level, you are gonna pay $108.00 for it, when you can get a 1 TB spinner drive for around $45.00.

So, if you can live with 500 GB of drive space, I would definitely go for the above drive.

There may be one issue and that is the cloud recovery client utility may not work on a drive half the storage as the original.

That is not a problem, because you can reinstall W10 on any size hard drive by creating a bootable W10 USB flash drive installer using the Media creation tool at the link below.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.

If you prefer to get a 1 TB mechanical hard drive, let me know, and I will give you a link to one of those.

Thank you for all your help Paul. Just one more question, how do I exit this screen to perform a safe shutdown of my computer.

You're very welcome.

If it is stuck there, you can press and hold the power button until the notebook turns off.

If it is not stuck there, let it run until it is done, and then press and hold the power button.

If I'm reading the report correctly it says it is gonna take 96 hours to complete?

If so, just kill it now.

HP Recommended

It is now 125 hours to complete, and rising... I will kill it now as you say.

Thank you.
