hp omen x 17-ap051nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

SO I purchased an Omen x 17-ap051nr, 2.8 ghz up to 3.2 turbo boost, 32 gb, NVidia GeForce 1080.

So I manly play games like the Sims 4 and tomb raider on my pc but even low graphic games like Alice madness returns has stutter and lag, not smooth at all. When I've watched YouTube reviews gamers gameplay are so smooth and crystal. Also my sims look grainy and one point playing tomb raider it was so much lag I decided not to play anymore. Someone please help me, I've done updates, reboots and even changed the graphics settings to try and get smooth gameplay. I'm upset that people with lower end laptops are having more smoother game play then I am. Someone help please!

Hello @SimsDad28

I don't know if I can find the issue, but I can offer some suggestions.

Updating all the the drivers and Windows system is the first step. You might also have something in the background running at the same time as the games. That can rob the cpu of resources also. Open the Task Manager (ctrl/alt/del) and select the cpu column, then when the game lags, see if there is a service or program running that is taking up lots of cpu. You can disable that service afterward.

Sometimes, a graphics driver might be the culprit. Either you need to CLEAN install the driver again (using DDU), or the latest one is not the best solution. I assuming you used an NVIDIA driver directly from NVIDIAs site.

If V-Sync is on, turn it off and see if it helps.

Are your temperatures running hot? Might not be the problem if so, but its good to check anyways. Run the Omen Command Center while gaming and watch the temps.

Did you install a third party Anti Virus Suite? That might possibly be interfering.

Check for hardware issues. Reboot the laptop and rapidly tap the F2 key until a UEFI Diagnostics menu appears. There should be an option for an Extensive set of tests. It will take a few hours to complete. Usually, if there is a hardware issue, it will show.  Make sure your charger is plugged in first.

Last resort:  If you've had the laptop for a few years now, it might be time to reinstall Windows. Things can get cluttered up in the system and registry.  Doing a fresh install speeds things up and removes anything that was causing a slow down in most cases. But I would only reinstall the OS, then reinstall one game and test it first before updating Windows. You can return the system back to factory settings via F11 at Boot. Or you can reinstall to the latest version of Windows up front with the Media Creation Tool. Either way will wipe the data from the drive, so back up what you need first.
