Hello,

After updating windows, I rebooted my HP Omen 16.1" laptop.  It displayed on my second monitor instead of the first.  I shut down the laptop and disconnected the HDMI to my second screen.  I attempted to power on, but the laptop did not respond.  I completed multiple hard resets with many different outcomes:

1. Hard reset turns on with only battery connected/AC power cord.  It pops up with CMOS error 502 and then boots to Windows.  The laptop eventually just turns off/crashes before or after windows loads, and even after I login.  The screen just goes black and the power indicator on the power button disappears.  I then have to hard reset for anything to occur again.  The charger indicator never goes black when the AC power cord is connected.

2. Hard reset and the power button displays that the laptop is attempting to boot.  A few fans spin, but the screen does nothing.  A second monitor was connected to see if it would display there, but no connection was found.

3. Hard reset and the laptop will not boot, have to repeat reset.

4. Hard reset and the laptop indicates it is trying to boot, but nothing ever appears and the power indicator light turns off a few seconds after it turned on.

5. Hard reset and the computer boots to no display, but the caps lock indicator light blinks slowly and then rapidly.  It repeats this sequence a few times.

I have been able to get into the BIOS and attempt to run a fast HP hardware scan/performance review and everything came back positive, but the batter said it was too full to detect any issues.  I would just replace the battery, but the fact that this happens with the battery disconnected and the laptop plugged in makes me think something else is wrong.

I took the laptop to Best Buy's Geek Squad, and they believe there is a motherboard problem and the computer is dead.  They could not get it to boot.  I can still get it to boot, but it crashes eventually.

In summary, the laptop will boot after a hard reset, but it eventually crashes/powers off within 5 minutes of startup.  This happens with the battery disconnected, battery only connected, and both the power cord and battery connected.

I would appreciate any help, Thanks.

Hi @HB451,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown—this is incredibly helpful for diagnosing the issue. Based on your description, your HP Omen 16.1" laptop is experiencing intermittent boot failures, CMOS error 502, and spontaneous shutdowns, even after a successful boot. Let's try to work on fixing the issue.

Perform a Full CMOS Reset

This can clear the checksum error and reset the BIOS properly.

Option A: Through BIOS (if you can access it)

  1. Power on the device and immediately tap ESC, then F10 to enter BIOS.
  2. Inside BIOS, press F9 to load defaults
  3. Press F10 to save and exit

Option B: Manual Discharge (if BIOS isn't accessible)

  1. Disconnect all power sources (battery + AC adapter)
  2. Hold down the power button for 60 seconds
  3. Reconnect only the AC adapter
  4. Attempt to power on again

If possible, open the back panel and briefly disconnect the CMOS battery (a coin-cell battery on the motherboard) for 5–10 minutes, then reconnect. This fully resets the BIOS at the hardware level.

Run HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics (Long Tests)

Even if the quick hardware tests passed, more extensive system board tests may reveal deeper faults.

Steps:

  1. Turn off the laptop
  2. Press ESC > then F2 to launch HP Diagnostics (UEFI)
  3. Run:
    • System Board Test (Long)
    • Battery Test
    • Memory and CPU Stress Test

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hello again,

I have gotten the laptop to power on and function.  However, the display, keyboard, and touchpad are not working.  I can currently use the laptop using a second screen (HDMI input), external mouse, and external keyboard.

My first thought is to reseat the touchpad and keyboard on the motherboard, but this wouldn't solve the display issue.  Also, the light that indicates that the laptop is powered on is not displayed.  This leads me to believe that power is not reaching the keyboard.

In short, how can I get the laptops built-in display, keyboard, and touchpad to function again.

Thanks.
