I think my laptop battery ran out while I was away from the PC.  The power cable had become dislodged.  Now the laptop is totally dead.

 

I have check the power supply with an AVO meter and it seems to be working.

 

When I plug the power cable in, a little orange light next to the power cable flashes once.  After that, there are no lights anywhere.

 

I have tried holding the power button down for 30+ seconds, with the power connect and with the power disconnected.  I cannot see a battery door; I removing the battery helps on some laptops where there are power/charging issues.

 

There are no lights, no fans, not hard drive noise.  It's completely dead.

 

What can I try?

Here is the answer to my problem, in case it helps someone else.

 

My laptop power supply is dead.  I took the laptop to a store, and my laptop worked perfectly with the store PSU.

 

Using a mulitmeter, I can measure that the power supply is giving out 19.5V, as expected.  I have no explanation for why it does not power the laptop.

There is no battery door on most modern laptops now. You will have to remove the screws and take the bottom off to access the battery and disconnect it. Then see if the laptop will run with the power cord plugged in.

Thanks. I did not know that about battery doors.  It seems like a bit of con, as the battery has died on every laptop I have owned at home and at work.

It looks simple enough, but it says that voids the warranty...

Where does it say it will void the warranty? If you aren't replacing anything or break anything, you wont void it. You are simply disconnecting the battery cable to see if the laptop will turn back on. If it will, you will know the battery is dead.

BUT If you are still under warranty, you can simply contact support also.

I can have someone contact you here also if you are under warranty. Let us know.

The battery section is in the "Removal and replacement procedures for authorized service provider parts" section and says it voids the warranty.  The same statement is in the user manual for the 15-dc0000 series laptops.  I don't understand why, it's a pretty simple procedure. 

 

Quote "CAUTION: Components described in this chapter should only be accessed by an authorized service provider.
Accessing these parts can damage the computer or void the warranty."

I was planning on accessing one of these parts (the battery).

 

Yes, it is under warranty.  I'll take it back to Best buy today.  I am not expecting that to go well - I am sure they will "repair" it, so I will be without a laptop for months.  If someone from HP could help me find a solution first, that would be great.  Thanks.
