HP OMEN 15-dc1052nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I purchased the OMEN by HP Laptop 15-dc1xxx yesterday.  I noticed that out of the box the CPU temp is running pretty high while idling or just using web browser at around 65-70 degrees C.  Now I ran a benchmark test for Rise of the Tomb Raider on high and very high settings Omen Performance Control set to default.  I kid you not the CPU temp spiked between 90-96 degrees C during this benchmark which is unacceptable in my opinion.  I didn't even have Omen Performance Control set to Performance mode which by the way does absolutely nothing other than spike the fans and temp up.  I got the same FPS results from my benchmark test in both settings.

So I went and downloaded the Intel XTU application.  I was going to disable turbo boost which I noticed it was greyed out and you could not change the setting.  I don't know why the manufacturer would have this setting locked....... This is a gaming laptop everything should be open for customization by the user.  So I then uninstalled XTU and installed the Throttle Stop program.   Here I was able to disable turbo boost.  I kid you not running Rise of the Tomb Raider on Very High settings I achieved an FPS near 100 and my CPU temp was about 75-80 degrees C during the benchmark test.

So what is the deal here HP.  I think you guys have some settings issues on these Omen laptops.  I have downloaded all of your latest BIOS and chipset updates and none of them have worked.  This laptop is less than 24 hrs old.  This appears to be a common issue as I see many threads for high CPU temps on these laptops.

Thanks.

Hello @sarty51

It helps to give the FULL model number. You only gave a series number, the X's only represent missing numbers.

You can find the 7 digit Product number in the HP Support Assistant and that will give us the same info.

I can only give you my opinion on this matter. From the years Ive seen this complaint, its apparent to me you are either a lucky or unlucky lottery chip winner when it comes to how hot the cpu will run. Others with that series and cpu dont have issues, some do.

There is no magic fix for this that I have ever found. IF its runs hot, its going to continue to run hot. The only thing you could do is what you've done already and undervolt the cpu with throttlestop.  If you can live with that, you are good to go. Otherwise, all you can do is return the PC for a different one while you still have a chance.

Thanks for your reply!  I tried to reply via mobile but it looks like it did no save.  I am quite content with this laptop.  It performs well and I can not complain.  However I find it frustrating that HP has not addressed these issues.  I don't feel as though the issue is due to the hardware design rather than the BIOS and the programming from the bench at HP.  Using throttlestop to suppress the turbo feature I am still achieving comparable performance with the turbo boost enabled.  Reading other threads it is apparent that this has been an issue for awhile.  Whether HP admits it or not I feel as though they have some work to do to release an honest update.  I figured I would post again to shed light on the subject yet again.   Hoping another voice would be heard.

Nonetheless I love what this laptop delivers for the price point.  You can not get what came in this package for $1,200 anywhere else.  If so please enlighten me and I will take it back to MicroCenter tomorrow.

Also, full model number has been edited and included in the post.  Previous model number was actually copied from HP Support Assistant as was shown on this PC.

Thanks,

Sarty

Hey @sarty51

I have the same laptop and its a few months old now.

For the past few months it was great until now.

Any heavy task such as editing in Adobe Premiere Pro or casual Fortnite spikes the temperatures upto 97degree and to a point where its impossible to touch the keyboard due to the heat.

I see you have controlled the temperatures using ThrottleStop but i have no idea of this software and as i launched it all i saw were numberss... could you help me and tell me from where you disabled the boost to reduce the temperatures.

If you could post screenshots step-by-step it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

FalconSquadDude,

Sorry for the late reply.  Just disable turbo stop by clicking the "disable turbo" box.  Do not play with any voltage settings.  This is all you need to do.

Hi Sarty51, I share your sentiment. Just recently, after a lenghty troubleshooting with no assistance from HP, I found that DPTF - something that should regulate power and thermals of my hardware, causes my device (and many HP Omens) to randomly spawn an interrupt handler that causes 100% usage of a core, revving my cpu frequency and fan pretty high. While this is not the exact issue you're dealing with, I believe that this may be related to poor implementation of ACPI events handling or even DPTF itself, which in turn is potentially able to cause both of these problems. We're waiting for HP to address this.

Hey,

Well, you are not alone.

I am easily obsessed. Bought my OMEN 15-dc1980nd 24 may,

First tried to Turn G-Sync after pulling out of the box. It was on ! After 6 hours an bios update came in.

Since then I lost G-Sync. I am a developer/debugger/web-app. I tried to debug NV Control Panel.

Did work. But not fully. After 10 recoverys as also tried:

HP Cloud recovery 5x

OEMless, Win 10 home, Pro 5x

And since the first time I booted up this laptop. It came up from hell.

No sleep for 2 days, and fell a sleep. Days after Days..

2 Months later.. Left G-Sync behind. Whatever the f this laptop has made me aggressive.

My OLD HP DV6-6b41ed HAIL his powerfull build. (RIP) 2 months ago.

I had no time to develop anything anymore because it works on my nervous.

My GPU is 80*c

CPU is constant 97/98*c EVEN after starting edge. It pulls up. And fans blow like crazy.

IDLE with all the crap software (analystics, telemetry...)  it is 60% both +/- GPU 57*c    CPU 59+

Now without analystics+telemetry drivers.

IDLE 35*c GPU

IDLE 39-45*c CPU

That's almost good. But still when starting an app,

Or Forza Horizon 4, Tomb Raider Shadow, Or TB Rise, Happy Few, as games it kicks in the CPU to 97 Constant Fans 100%

Ansys, Matlab, Delphi, Visual studio, Python using 97/98*c as also the same.

Every VERSION on my product page. I have tried to install.

Upgrade.

Downgrade.

W10 Home to PRO

W10 1803 updated all drivers

W10 1809 updated all drivers.

W10 1903 updated all drivers.

Debugged and modded some drivers. Okay ?

CPU is unlocked.

Intel Managemant is updated.

BIOS F.03 (Out of the box), F.05 was a disaster, F.12 Working almost good!!

GPU drivers upgraded and downgraded from 419.71 to 431.xx,

10+ different versions.

Spoiler
Nope, still not. Also HP Analystic.. Synaptics sound.. Realtek HD telemetry. More crap.

Only thing what really worked, no not even Intel XTU.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try to enable advanced power config, I used registry keys. But try to use with a software called Bitsum I think.

Bitsum can enable advanced power config.

Change your processors governer.

Also Nvidia Telemetry free drivers. + GPU tweaked inf or drivers.

You can try throttlestop ( BITSUM Application unlocks power config, acts as the same !!, throttlestop is more expert settings)

I also disabled telemetry of HP Analystics. and in OMEN command center. On driver level, so you need to know things before starting.

Reinstalled for the LAST time because I made a promise to myself.

If HP can't sell a good notebook.

Hire me.

I can look underestimated right now.

Believe me,

I PUSH TO THE LIMIT.

Goodluck,

As no offense, I hope this HP OMEN lives also as I live 🙂

Greetings

Mr. M.F. K
