HP OMEN Notebook - 15-5250nd (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I bought, second hand, an older laptop. A HP OMEN Notebook - 15-5250nd (ENERGY STAR).

productnr: N9R13EA#ABH

The laptop is not used at all by the previous owner. Crazy but true.

I updated Windows 10, to the latest version, that needed to be done.

I expected that there is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M in there.

If I look at the support page, it must be there

https://support.hp.com/nl-nl/document/c04999089

But it is not there.

- In Device manager, I only see the HD Graphics 4600. No sign of the NVIDIA.

- In Device manager, I searched for entries with an exclamation mark. There are none.

- Programs like Speccy only shows the HD Graphics 4600.

I tried to download drivers. I used my serialnr and producnr op the HP supportsite. That lead me to this:

https://support.hp.com/nl-nl/drivers/selfservice/hp-omen-15-5200-notebook-pc/8499271/model/8902784?s...
- I downloaded the NVIDIA driver, want to install it. Gives me the message that is cannot find compatible hardware

- I download the BIOS update F48, double clicked that in Windows. Gives me 3 choices (update, recovery flash or copy). I choose update. Gives me the message that the BIOS update is not compatible. I downloaded an earlier release F47, that one I could install and so I did.

But still no success.

So I run the HP software from reboot, using the ecape key. I choose the option that formats my C drive and put Windows back on. Factory reset. That took a while. When that was done, I checked the Device driver immediatly, but no NVIDIA there.

Then I have something that is called the HP performance Adviser.
There I can see a block diagram of my hardware, no NVIDIA there.

I give up...

I know it an older type of laptop, but is is freeking fast compared to my older laptop.

Any suggestions what I can do to activate that NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M are welcome.

Or, is it just not there...

Was prepping for opening it up. Had It upside down, removing the rubber things on the back.

Dit not open up, had no matching screwdriver. So turned it around and started the laptop.

Windows was installing display drivers, of Intel and Nvidia.

Restarted.

Removed the Intel display device

Restarted

3d device again there. And a minute later the Nvidia (next to the Intel)

Shutted down. Restarted. Still there.

Shutted down.

A few hours later start up and gone.

Made a bootable usb, with hardware check programms. Nothing there. No Nvidia found.

So I will throw this on hardware failure.

So it is technically not solved, but I remark it as solved.

@Hubert_Blom

Its specs

Because it is a secondhand machine therefore very hard to say. Its NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M (4 GB GDDR5 dedicated) may fail by some reason, please ask its previous owner.

Regards.

Well. I know the previous owner myself. She bought it, but never used it. Because the keyboard and mousepad stop responding when doing a cold start, or going to sleep and wakeup. Because of that, the laptop went into the closet and never came out for years, untill this weekend.

The keyboard issue is revolved by the Windows 10 updates by the way.

So it could be the NVIDIA is malfunctioning from the start then.

Now this is typical. I was fiddeling with the powersettings.

there are options about the onn off buttons and closing the lid.

I do not use that buttons, I just use the windows button to shut down.

But.

I changed the settings there.

All actions to set to take no actions

Removed the check for sleepmode

Removed the check for fast booting.

I did that, because My keyboard was stil not working on a cold restart.

After the reboot, I went to device manager.

And there, under other devices, was a 3d Video controller

And after some minutes, the geforce was installed by itself.

Not sure why.

Now I installed the NVidia software also.

So, I thought is was solved. I even made a photo of the display adapter being there. I went to taskmanager and there it was also. It was functioning!

Then. I made a restore point in Windows. I would not want to lose this situation.

And turned off the laptop.

A hour later, turned it on. Started Windows. But no nvidia there. Gone again.

Thought I should recover the restored point. Did that, but no nvidia.

So I was lucky once, I have seen it.

But is is gone again.

Any any thoughts are appriciated.
