HI, i just bought an HP OMEN 15-ce006na. at first the keyboard backlight worked fine, then (after an update) it wouldn't come on. I have looked on the forums, did an online chat with Microsoft,  nothing worked. Hear tell of 'HP Chat' but can't seem to find a link, only get message 'not available'. I'm in the UK by the way.

All the HP support pages say 'press F5' well my backlight icon is on F4 and pressing that (in all the combinations suggested) does nothing.

I am so cheesed off by this - because the keyboard markings are in 'dragon red', the keys are very difficult to see without the backlight, especially by artificial light. I had to resort to turning on the torch ap on my mobile to see which ones I was pressing when i was trying all the hints!! I do touch type but not for all the function keys...  Its a great laptop in evey other respect (bought it to fully enjoy EuroTruck Simulator) but this lighting issue is making me wonder if I bought a dud. Is it drivers? Tried looking for HP drivers but only get othercompany links who want to charge me £xx per month to update my drivers all the time... already did that once and it messed up my wireless printing so not a fan of those guys.

Seriously hoping someone can help. BTW I also seem to have registered twice on this forum, once as ElaineJ and as ElaineJJackson - because it didn't like my username/password the first time I thought I hadn't completed the process ... argh, not having a good day here!!

Hi @ElaineJJackson, Thank you for posting at HP Forum.

I understand we've been having a bad day with respect to the keyboard issue, but we will try and get it taken care of ASAP!

You mentioned the keyboard is not lighting up since a BIOS update, and have tried pressing the F4 key to turn it on.

Have you also tried to press FN+F4 key? BIOS updates can sometimes change default settings for BIOS, so perhaps the action key mode is changed.

Please do try that and let me know, if you have already tried that, even then do let me know.

Hi, thanks for your answer and the link - however I already tried that. the page you sent me to says to check the F5 key for the backlight icon. My backlight icon is on the F4 key -but pressing that (or the F5) makes no difference at all.

So I'm still without a backlight....

Hi, thanks for your answer.

i don't know which key has FN on it - there isn't one on my keyboard, but pressing F4 does not help, I did already try that before posting here, sorry if I did not make that clear.

You're welcome @ElaineJJackson! I'm glad the computer is working fine :D!

Also, if in case you want to revert the change back to how it was prior to the update, all you need to do is:

1)Power the computer down.

2)Now, as soon as you press the power button, tap the ESC key till the menu comes up.

3)Select F10- BIOS.

4)In BIOS, go to System Configuration, and you will find 'Action Keys Mode'.

5)Chances are it will Disabled, go ahead and Enable it, Save and Exit.

6)You're good to go!
