My Omen 17-cb0056tx has an issue where the (brand new) power adapter stops charging as soon as the machine is switched on. The charge light goes from orange, briefly to white, then turns off. As soon as the machine powers off, the charge light glows orange and the battery charges normally. From my testing, I believe it to be a hardware issue.

I tried removing the battery... the charge light glowed white. However, pressing the power button yielded no response.

I have also determined when the machine is on, without the charger plugged in, it runs fine. However if the charger is plugged in, the CPU speed locks at 800mhz, and the GPU speed locks at 300mhz. When I pull the adapter plug out, the CPU and GPU speeds return to normal.

I've tried to hard reset but no joy.

To save what little hair I have left, has anyone had this problem and managed to solve it?

Many, many thanks in advance.

Your power supply is defective.  It cannot both charge the battery and run the laptop at the same time.

It is less likely, but still possible, that the laptop has a problem.  What was the original problem that caused you to get a new charger?    Is your battery good?

There are two approved chargers for your laptop

L00818-850
200W ADAPTER PFC SMART SLIM
N43500-001
AC ADAPTER 200W SLIM4.5MM PFC RA SMART

They are the "smart tip" type and must supply a minimum of 10 amps to both charge and run the laptop

If you bought the charger online, can you provide a link to the item?  Typically the price will be $100 USD

Thank you for your reply, BeemerBiker. I greatly appreciate it.

I purchased the charger from eBay, this one here https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/394505888264

Reason for purchase was the original charger had mysteriously disappeared from the laptop bag and, indeed, the house.

I will endeavor to have the output of the new charger measured.

That appears to have the correct amperage.

It does not mention  "smart pin" and does not have an HP label

"Blue tip with inside pin" is not the same as HP's smart pin and it is suspicious that returns are not allowed.

Notify the seller of the problem.  Go to retail store that has genuine HP charger and see if it works.

Try to return the charger if a genuine one works.

Well explained.

Thank you kindly for your advice, BeemerBiker, I will do as you suggest.

Now, I have here an older HP Omen 15 hwith a genuine HP 150W charger. I tried connecting this charger to the 17 and it still has the exact same issues. Then I tried plugging in the new charger into the old Omen and it works as normal.

Could the problem lay elsewhere, for example, within the module of the port that the charger plugs into?

Your power plans may be wrong.  Set processor to %100 for both battery and when powered on.

Or select the "high performance" plan.  Maybe this is the problem!

Bring up your power plan and make sure it looks like this

enter "edit power plan" in the windows search area and then select "change advanced power setting"

and expand the processor power management
