Hey guys and gals, first of all thanks for your time and hopefully, you got some ideas.

The problem is as following: When I start my laptop, it may or may not boot up. Oftentimes (about once a day) the laptop starts booting, but crashes after about 4 seconds after pressing the power button. If it does so, the keyboard lights (which I usually have turned on) are not activted while the laptop starts.

After the crash, every other attempt to start the laptop may or may not work. Usually, it keeps crashing after about 4 seconds, now WITH turning on the keyboard lights. If I wiggle the power button enough, it sometimes seems to trigger something and the booting process actually works, again disabling the keyboard lights (so I have to manually enable them again).

Closing the lid of the laptop and reopening again seems to "refresh" this cycle and everything starts from the beginning.

I suspect some hardware issues, though I could not even start to guess what exactly could be the problem here. When the laptop is running, everything seems to work splendid - temperature is in the green, no sudden crashes while gaming or anything else, really. Of course, the laptop just about turned 2 years old, so goodbye warranty. If needs be, I'll be more than happy to open it up and get to the bottom of this. [edit]

Side note: The laptop was dropped one time in the past and a bit of damage occured, as in the mousepad having "sunk in" a bit and one corner of plastic being broken off. The problems started about six months later, though, so I doubt there is a immediate connection.

Thanks all!

Welcome to the HP Support Community

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Are you facing this issue after an update?

Have you tried updating your notebook using Windows update or HP support assistance?

Could you please help me with the exact error code?

However, since you haven’t captured the error code or message,

I would request you to follow the below steps to capture and reply back with the error message/code to identify the issue and find a permanent fix:

  • In Windows, search for and open View advanced system settings.

  • In the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.

  • Under System Failure, remove the check mark next to automatically restart, and then click OK.

  • Restart the computer to apply the change.

  • The computer no longer restarts automatically when a blue screen error occurs.

Keep me posted, how it goes!

Have a great day!

Hey Raj,

There were no updates I am aware of beforehand.

As I've already said, there is no error code. The machine tries to start and crashes after about 4 seconds. It does not boot into BIOS nor Windows, it just crashes. Which is why I think it's hardware related, not software, really.

Thanks all the same for trying to help!

Well Raj, you are my one and only hero. It actually was a problem with the BIOS, and after updating it to the newest version available on the HP drivers forums, the laptop once again works like a charm. Thanks a bunch!
