Hello,

i have a huge problem with my HP Omen Notebook. Since a while the fans stops working randomly which leads to overheat and shutting of the Notebook.

I definitely think it is no hardware problem because they work a while until they stop. A restart solves the problem for a while.

I already tried a hard reset, which did not help.

I really need urgent help so that I can continue using the PC.

thank you very much!

kind regards

Florian

Hi @sfgsdfgasdfg

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for your detailed explanation and for already performing a hard reset—that’s a great first step. I completely understand how disruptive this is, especially when it leads to shutdowns.

If your HP Omen notebook’s fans stop working randomly and only resume after a restart, the issue is likely tied to thermal control software or firmware conflicts—not hardware failure. Let’s walk through a clean, structured recovery to restore stable fan behavior.

Let’s work together to stabilize your system.

Step-by-Step: Restore Consistent Fan Operation on HP Omen

1. Update BIOS and System Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause erratic fan behavior:

  • Visit the official support page for your Omen model:
HP Omen Notebook – Software and Drivers
  • Enter your exact model number (e.g., Omen 15-ekxxxx).
  • Download and install the latest BIOS and System Firmware.
  • Restart your notebook after installation.

2. Update OMEN Gaming Hub and System Event Utility

These control thermal profiles and fan behavior:

  • Open the Microsoft Store and search for OMEN Gaming Hub.
  • Click Update if available.
  • Then visit:
    HP System Event Utility
(Search by model and download under Software-Solutions).
  • Install and restart.

3. Reset OMEN Gaming Hub Thermal Controls

  • Open OMEN Gaming Hub.
  • Go to Performance Control > Thermal Control.
  • If available, switch from Smart Sense to Manual or Default.
  • Set fan speed to Auto or a fixed value (e.g., 50%) to test stability.
  • Avoid using Smart Sense if it resets or disables fan profiles.

4. Clean Boot to Rule Out Conflicts

This helps isolate third-party software interference:

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  • Under the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
  • Go to the Startup tab > Open Task Manager > Disable all startup items.
  • Restart the PC and observe fan behavior.

To revert, repeat the steps and re-enable services and startup items.

5. Monitor with HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Press Esc repeatedly at startup > F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Run the System Test > Fan Test.
  • If the fan test passes, it confirms the hardware is responsive.

  • Avoid using third-party fan control utilities—they may conflict with OMEN Gaming Hub.
  • If the fan stops during idle but resumes under load, that’s expected in CoolSense or Smart Sense modes. However, if it stops under load, that’s abnormal and needs correction as above.

Let me know your exact Omen model if you'd like direct links to BIOS and driver updates. You're doing a great job staying on top of this—let’s get your system cool and stable again.

Hi @Hawks_Eye

thank you for your answer.

Following results:

1. Update BIOS and System FIrmware:

Unfortunately i cannot update the BIOS cause of the following error:

sfgsdfgasdfg_1-1767965971767.png

i already tried to increase the EFI partition size or creating a bigger new one, but i couldn manage to delete the old one or that the system boots from the new bigger EFI partition. If you can tell me how to do this properly, i can try to update.

Maybe some interesting information is, hat as soon as i open the BIOS update and click here:

sfgsdfgasdfg_2-1767966032583.png

The fans spinning up at full speed for a few seconds.

All the other available System firmware i updated. Which was also some kind of strange because every time i startet the update nothing really happened. For example:

- double click:

- next

- next

sfgsdfgasdfg_5-1767966159745.png

- next

sfgsdfgasdfg_6-1767966174746.png

and thats it - nothing more, no information screen or anything, and this behaviour at all the firmware updates. Not really statisfying i guess.

2. Update OMEN Gaming Hub and System Event Utility

Everything up to date

3. Reset OMEN Gaming Hub Thermal Controls

Done - same behaviour

4. Clean Boot to Rule Out Conflicts

Done - same behaviour

5. Monitor wiht HP Hardware Diagnostics

Did the system Test, there is no step with Fan Test

Result:

The exact model is: OMEN by HP Laptop 17-ck2099ng (7N2H8EA)

But i found all the software so not necessary i think.

I really hope we can fix the problem somehow - also sending the PC to you for repairing is an option. I definitely need a working notebook ASAP.

Thank you very much!
