Hi, wondering if anyone can help or point me in the right direction.
I have recently acquired an HP Omen Max 16 laptop and am trying to get it set up to work with my external monitor using the RTX 5080 graphics via a USB4 to DP 2.1 cable.
I can get it set up using the HDMI with no problem, but when I connect it via the USB4/DP I get no output whatsoever. The specifications for the laptop state that it is a fully capable USB4 port for charging, data and Displayport and I have tried both of the ports in case one is specifically for Displayport.
I am using Windows 11 with all the latest updates, etc and I have changed the input selected on the monitor as well (although it does switch automatically when input is detected).
If anyone has any insights or suggestions I would appreciate it.

Hi @Leos_Angel,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I can imagine how frustrating it must be to have a powerful laptop like the HP OMEN MAX 16-ah0000 with RTX 5080 and yet face issues getting your external monitor to work via USB-C to DisplayPort 2.1. You're doing everything right, and I’m here to help you troubleshoot this issue.
According to the official specs, your OMEN MAX 16 has two USB Type-C 4.0 ports that support:
- Power Delivery (PD)
- DisplayPort
- Sleep and Charge
So yes, your laptop should support video output via USB-C to DP 2.1.
Troubleshooting Steps to Fix USB4 to DP Display Issue
1. Check BIOS Settings
Some users found that Display over USB-C can be disabled in the BIOS.
- Restart your laptop and press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS.
- Look for Advanced > Device Configuration > USB-C Display Output.
- Make sure it’s enabled.
- Save and exit.
2. Update All Drivers (Especially USB-C and NVIDIA)
Even if Windows is up to date, optional updates may include critical USB-C fixes.
- Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options > Optional Updates
- Install anything related to HP USB-C, Display, or NVIDIA
- Also update via:
- HP Support Assistant
- NVIDIA Driver Downloads
Some users reported success only after installing optional HP USB-C updates.
3. Try a Power Cycle with USB-C Reset
This quirky but effective method has worked for others:
- Disconnect all cables.
- Hold Power + F6 for 20 seconds.
- Turn on the laptop and reconnect the USB4 to DP cable.
More advanced reset:
- Shut down the laptop.
- Unplug power and all peripherals.
- Hold Windows + B + Power for 4 seconds.
- Then press Up Arrow, Down Arrow, Escape, and Power for 10 seconds.
- Reconnect everything and power up.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Many thanks for the reply detailing some possible solutions, unfortunately none of them seemed to work for me. I did also speak to a wonderful support technician yesterday who went through some steps to try to solve as well. Unfortunately, nothing seems to have worked. Her workaround solution is to either use the HDMI or try an external docking station, she recommended the HP Thunderbolt 120W G4 so that I can use the DisplayPort until there is a driver update to fix the issue as she believes it to be a hardware limitation. Admittedly not the solution I was looking for as it seems a tad silly to have a laptop with both onboard and discrete GPU that do not use one of the primary functions of the Thunderbolt 4 port. I may try a reinstall with back to factory settings to see if that might help otherwise may go down the dock route, but again, another expense on top of the expense for the laptop to get it to do something that it should already do.
Again, many thanks for your suggested solutions.
Regards
Angel
