Greetings,
I am experiencing lower fps rates in games. They aren't momentary or random drops in fps; it is just a constant lower fps rendering gaming nearly impossible. This happened overnight for reasons unknown. I've experienced this issue before and found a solution online relating to the laptop saying it is in the "High Performance" power option, but actually is not. Or it is somehow not registering it. I have forgotten how I fixed the problem last time. The laptop is always plugged in, with the "High Performance" power option selected. I've just updated my nVidia drivers and went over the settings in the control panel. Nothing is different than what it was a few days ago when my games were running smoothly.
Any help is appreciated, thank you

OK Thanks.
Its really hard to know what know is going, especially without details.
Is it one game or several, which one? What was the FPS prior to this and what is it now?
Did this happen after a recent Windows update? If so, could you try rolling Windows back to a restore point prior to the update?
What driver did you update to? Was it from HP or directly from nvidia?
Did anything change with your network recently?
Sometimes this can be related to a graphics driver update if you used nvidia. In such case, if you are using nvidia drivers directly, you would need to check their forum for any issues related to that.
An example happened early this year when a nvidia update was causing this same issue and users had to roll back several versions to temporarily fix it.
Also, are you running any antivirus suite? If so, an update may have altered its firewall and cause weird issues.
I would also open the HP Support Assistant (if you still have it installed) and make sure the UEFI Diagnostics is updated.
Then turn off the PC.
Run the Diagnostics at boot. Tap the F2 key on power on to access the Diagnostics tools.
Run an extensive test to see if there are any issues with the system, especially the graphics card and power source.
Thats the best I can offer without having it in my hands.

@wllmdng, welcome to the forum.
Here is a guide that may help you increase your system performance. Also, make certain that all of the patches for the games are up to date. If you are using Steam this will be done automatically.

This is happening while plugged in. It used to be that when I unplugged, I experienced a performance decrease, which is why I kept it plugged in all the time. Now, it feels the same between plugged in and unplugged, both with poor performance.

Thank you for your reply. I followed your suggestion for a Windows rollback and ended up reinstalling Windows. The reinstallation seemed to do the trick and the computer's performance is back to where it was. I'm still not sure where the problem stemmed from but am more than happy with how its running now
Much appreciated!

Good to know.
Well, success by reinstallation might indicate the recent Windows updates may have been the culprit.
Although we cannot be for sure, Ill go with it anyway. 👍
Considering what the fix was, I would also consider creating an Image backup onto an external hard drive.
Aomei Backupper or Macrium Reflect are good tools to do this with and have free versions that will work.
If this happens again, it will be faster to reinstall an image backup rather than a clean install and then reinstall drivers and games all over again.
Let me know if you have other questions.
Good luck.
