Hi All,
I am experiencing a rather unusual issue with my HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - it's working as expected (meaning it's quite responsive and can full throttle to play games) only when it's NOT charging or it's NOT connected to any power source. As soon as I plug in the AC adapter, the performance drops 5 times. It's still usable but running anything results in much longer wait times (web browser) or low fps (like 15 fps in 20-year-old games). It came to the point where I am better of running certain titles on my phone than on my "gaming" laptop 😕
I have tried multitude of solutions, none of which proved sufficient. Here are some from the list:
- checked Windows Power settings and set everything to full Performance (both the regular Power Settings and Windows Graphic Settings for video card)
- updated drivers for NVIDIA Graphics Card
- updated drivers for Intel Processor
- tried updating to the latest HP dedicated drivers for graphics/processor as Intel prompted me it might be a better option. Didn't notice any change, moved back to the latest Intel drivers.
- updated BIOS
- did the full check of system/components with HP Power Diagnostics - all green.
One thing I was unable to check with HP Power Diagnostics is the adapter itself. The program cancels the task even though it is plugged in. I do have original HP adapter that came with the laptop.
I do want to use my laptop as intended and being able to do so in battery-only state is just a workaround I'm not comfortable with. I made the purchase this year so it's still healthy and can support a play time/extensive usage of around an 1-2 hours but with this kind of strain I will have to replace it in the nearest future, not even mentioning 1-2 hours of usage is suboptimal.
Would appreciate any help or a fix that I might have missed. Specs are below.

Would really appreciate any help in resolving the issue. Since my post I have:
- upgraded to Windows 11
- checked any power-related settings in BIOS
- tried physically disconnecting the battery which resulted in computer not being able to boot up properly (battery is needed for proper boot)
everything failing so far 😞
