Victus by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-s0000 (76T54AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I've been using my Victus 16-s0000 for ~6 months without any problems, until a few weeks ago when I noticed that my display and keyboard lights would flicker and close for a few seconds while playing a graphically intense game. I uninstalled the game in question and continued playing less intense games without any overheating problems. Today, I installed the same game as before and another, different resource-demanding game and noticed the issue happening again, this time sooner (15-30 seconds after opening the game and entering the main menu) and much more severely (the screen and light would go out for way longer). After doing some testing with the second game, I noticed that my overall CPU utilization would increase up to 60% while the game was booting up. After that, the utilization would hover around 20% in the main menu. However, my CPU temps would jump from ~50C to 75-85C while booting up the game, stay at ~70C for 15-30 secs, then suddenly jump up to 90-100C (and I would be forced to close the game after that, and the temps would return to normal). I didn't observe the same temperatures with my GPU (it always seemed to hover around 60C). I have an AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS w/ Radeon 780M Graphics and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU with Windows 11 Pro. I also tested the second game with fans at maximum (~6000 RPM), and this time, the CPU temps would hover around ~90C in the main menu (GPU still at ~60C). I didn't have these before, as my temps for the first game would always hover around 80-85C, for example. Any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

@dedsir, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding CPU Overheating Issues on HP Victus 16!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If your HP Victus 16-s0000 is experiencing overheating issues, there are several steps you can take to resolve them:

Clean the Vents and Inspect the Fans

Dust and debris can accumulate in and around the air vents over time, obstructing airflow and causing the fans to work harder than normal to remove the heat.

  1. Turn off the computer and disconnect the power cord.
  2. Move any objects away from the computer.
  3. Find the vents on your laptop. They are usually underneath and on the sides of the computer. Use canned air to remove the dust from the vents to improve airflow.
  4. Place the laptop on a hard, level surface. Avoid cloth surfaces like beds which restrict airflow.

Increase Efficiency to Reduce Heat

The computer works harder and generates more heat when multiple applications are open simultaneously or while playing graphically intense video games.

  1. Close applications when done using them.
  2. Change applications that run when Windows starts using the Startup tab in Task Manager.
  3. Lower the game resolution and decrease the graphics settings if the computer becomes warmer than usual while playing.

Make Sure There is Adequate Ventilation

To decrease the likelihood of overheating, ensure the fans on your computer can ventilate properly:

  • Keep the computer upright and on a sturdy, level surface.
  • Provide at least 15.25 cm (6 in) of clearance around each vent.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
