HP omen 15-ax012nl
Linux

Hello,

I wanted to upgrade my 2-year-old HP Omen 15-ax012nl from 8 to 16 GB of DDR4 ram. I managed to open it and noticed there are two 4gb boards inside. My question is: would it be better for me to buy 2x8gb boards or 1x16gb board (and would it even be supported? I'm a complete noob at this)? Also, could you point me to a decent ram to buy?

Thanks a lot for any help 🙂

Hi:

The service manual indicates the max is 2 x 8 GB of memory.   See page 4.

You would always want to install memory in both slots in matching capacities rather than a larger amount in one slot.

That is because memory in matched capacities runs at the more efficient dual data rate (DDR) mode.

A single memory chip, or say a 8 GB + a 4 GB chip will run in the less efficient single data rate (SDR) mode.

Here is what the crucial website has for memory for your model...They say the max is 32 GB, and they are usually right.

Thank you so much!

The 2x8gb kit on the page you linked seems out of stock. However I found it on my local Amazon. Can you confirm this is correct? https://www.amazon.it/Crucial-CT2K8G4SFS824A-Memoria-PC4-19200-260-Pin/dp/B01BIWMWVS/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?...

You're very welcome.

Yes, it appears that is the same kit on the crucial website.

It seems that they have several compatible configurations...

Okay, it looks like the difference is that one is single rank and the other (out of stock) is dual rank. However I also found the dual rank on Amazon (and it's also better because it would ship tomorrow with Amazon Prime): https://www.amazon.it/Crucial-CT2K8G4SFD824A-Memoria-SODIMM-260-Pin/dp/B019FRDAY6/ref=sr_1_2?__mk_it...

If you confirm it's okay then I'll buy it.

Thanks again for all the help 🙂

Looks good to me...that kit is listed as compatible...
