Hi @lukedew,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

High CPU and memory usage on your HP Pavilion Gaming laptop can be caused by a variety of factors, including background processes, software conflicts, malware, or even insufficient hardware for current software demands. Here are several steps you can take to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Check for Malware and Viruses

  • Run a full system scan: Use a reputable antivirus program to scan for malware and viruses that could be causing high CPU and memory usage.

2. Manage Startup Programs

  • Disable unnecessary startup programs:
    1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    2. Go to the Startup tab.
    3. Disable any programs that you don't need to start with Windows.

3. Update Drivers and Software

  • Update all drivers: Ensure your graphics, chipset, and network drivers are up to date. Download the latest drivers from the HP support website or the respective hardware manufacturers.
  • Update Windows and software: Ensure that Windows and all installed software are updated to their latest versions.

4. Check Background Processes

  • Task Manager:
    1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    2. In the Processes tab, check for any processes that are consuming a lot of CPU or memory.
    3. Right-click on resource-intensive processes and select End task if they are not critical.

5. Optimize Browser Usage

  • Browser extensions and tabs:
    1. Disable unnecessary browser extensions.
    2. Limit the number of open tabs.

6. Adjust Power Settings

  • Change power plan:
    1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
    2. Select the High performance power plan.

Kindly find the next set of steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi @lukedew,

Please find the next set of steps below.

7. Check for Windows Issues

  • System File Check:
    1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    2. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
    3. Allow the scan to complete and follow any on-screen instructions.

8. Manage Virtual Memory

  • Adjust virtual memory settings:
    1. Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings.
    2. Under the Advanced tab, click on Settings under Performance.
    3. Go to the Advanced tab and click on Change under Virtual memory.
    4. Set the initial size and maximum size to recommended values or allow Windows to manage it automatically.

9. Clean Up Disk Space

  • Disk Cleanup:
    1. Go to Start and type Disk Cleanup, then press Enter.
    2. Select the drive you want to clean and click OK.
    3. Check the boxes for the file types you want to delete and click OK.

10. Add More RAM

  • Upgrade RAM: If your laptop allows it, consider upgrading the RAM. Modern software can be quite demanding, and more RAM can help keep memory usage at bay.

11. Perform a Clean Boot

  • Clean boot:
    1. Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
    2. Go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and then click Disable all.
    3. Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager. Disable all startup items.
    4. Restart your laptop to see if the issue persists.

12. Reinstall Windows (Last Resort)

  • Reset Windows:
    1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
    2. Under Reset this PC, click Get started and follow the prompts. Choose to keep your files or remove everything based on your preference.

If the issue persists after trying these steps, there may be a hardware issue or a deeper system problem. Contact HP phone support for further assistance.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
