OMEN 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-b0000 (2W6B3AV)

Good evening,

Recently I had to replace my HP Omen 16's charging cord after it completely broke. I purchased an extremely similar replacement with the same wattage (230W). It isn't perfect; I purchased an adapter along with it to fit in my charging port, and because I bought it in Europe rather than my home country of The United States, I also had to buy an additional current and voltage adapter.

I've ran into an odd issue with the charger. It functions as expected when my laptop is in sleep mode or shut down, and charges at a fairly reasonable rate (the entire battery recharged in around 45 minutes).

The issue appeared whenever I tried to charge it while the laptop was powered on. The flow of power would continue for a few seconds after start up, before I got a sudden INCOMPATIBLE POWER SOURCE DETECTED notification.

The charger functions normally besides this, but this is a pretty massive hindrance all things considered. Stopping my work for upwards of 45 minutes every couple hours is very, very disruptive to my schedule, and I'm losing a lot of use out of it as a gaming laptop as well.

I've already tried several fixes. I attempted several HP hardware diagnostics tests of the adapter. They either registered as FAILED because it never recognized that an adapter was plugged in, or it was CANCELLED suddenly in the middle of the test if I started it within the few seconds it had to run before the flow of power was shut off. I don't believe its a cleanliness issue, as the adapter is very new and there's no clear signs of dirt or debris. I've used the Windows update troubleshooter as well with no results.

I have no idea what to do. If anyone has a solution, please help as soon as possible.

Hi @Tomomen22,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your PC!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your replacement charger is not fully compatible with your HP Omen 16, despite having the correct wattage (230W). The issue likely stems from one or more of the following:

Since you're using both a plug adapter and a voltage/current adapter, these might be affecting the power delivery.
Try a direct replacement charger without adapters, preferably from HP.

HP laptops actively check power source compatibility via firmware.
Solution:

Update BIOS (if possible) via HP Support Assistant.

Check HP Power Manager (if installed) and disable any strict power detection settings.

Voltage & Current Irregularities

Using an adapter to convert European voltage to U.S. standards might cause minor inconsistencies in power delivery.
Some HP gaming laptops have strict power requirements and reject even slightly off voltages.
Solution: Use a 230W HP-certified charger designed for your region.

Recommended Next Steps:

Try a direct 230W HP-certified charger (without adapters).
Update BIOS & HP drivers (if your laptop stays on long enough).
Check the charging port for damage or loose connections.
