Hi there!
So I literally got my OMEN a few hours ago today (26/03/2021), I love it and everything that it is doing.
However, I noticed that even when the laptop was idle, or when I was just checking an email, the fans were quite audible. I checked the temperature on OMEN Gaming Hub and even when it is idle the CPU temperature is relatively high - never less than 57 degrees (Celsius). My question was firstly, is this normal for this? I understand if I am gaming or doing something but when doing nothing, should the fan be audible, and should the temperatures be high?
I have ensured that everything is up to date. I also contacted a member of HP support where I was taken through a range of tests and things to do including:
1) Powering off, pressing the mute button whilst holding the power, before powering it back on.
2) Component tests including: System Board Test, Fan Speed and Fan Thermal Test (all passed).
3) A few times 'restarting to help find out what is up'
Seems that everything was fine, and makes sense, so I'm just wondering, is there a fix, or is this a hardware problem that I return it back (I bought the three year warranty with this as well)?

Hello,
I don't think those temps are ok. I have the 15-ek0005na (intel 10750h) version, and I get about 50 in idle (windows) or 44 (linux). Of course, check the real temps using Hwinfo, but I believe the issue is with the thermal paste that was applied.

Thanks for your response!
I definitely thought it was odd - when it's idle it is almost as if I am doing something that is heavy, i.e., playing a game or something. I wondered whether this was 'usual' for a gaming laptop considering that it my first experience with one. The fans just seem to be constantly audible, for example, even while I was just browsing Amazon.

It might be some sort of bloatware is maybe running in the background and eating up resources. You can look in the Task Manager to see if anything is. Then you can disable that function.
Or
This will sound odd, but since its brand new and you dont have it configured yet (at least not much time spent yet), I would simply reinstall Windows. I have seen this before and clean reinstalling usually solves it. If it continues to run really hot at idle (not opening anything yet), then send it back.
You can grab the HP Cloud copy and reinstall with all the drivers and software/partitions from HP. 32GB pen drive required.
Or
Use the MS Media Creation Tool. You will have to add the HP software yourself if you want it. 8GB pen drive required.
IF you have questions, let me know.

Hello!
Thanks so much for your suggestions!
I've had a look around at the Task Manager and there does not seem to be much running that could cause the high temperatures.
Funnily enough, I've been noticing the temperature increase and the fans coming on as soon as I open up the laptop and just check my emails these days. My average temperature at idle is around 50 degrees celsius with a high of around 79 degrees celsius.
I'm just wondering, do you know whether reinstalling windows would affect the warranty on the laptop (I have a three year warranty)?
I'm considering all options but at this point I have contacted HP support who recommended getting it booked in for a repair, but to be honest, I wonder whether it's better to just refund or get an exchange?

So to be clear, Idle is after you turn it on and you don't do anything at all for 5 minutes, the idle temp is in the 50's?
Checking Email.. yes your temps will go up as soon as you start doing stuff. This is normal. My temps go up simply opening a browser, but usually settle down in a bit. Just depend on the program you start. Once I close stuff, the temps go back down. Remember, laptops typically run hotter than desktops also. It will get even hotter when you run a game. Have you tried any games to see how it performs?
Without my being there to see what happens while you're using it, I would suggest you go ahead and reinstall Windows. It will NOT void your warranty and wont hurt anything. I would try that before I consider sending it in.
