I updated my BIOS (as suggested by HP) and when it completed and rebooted I was sent to the Admin Password screen as usual since I added an Admin password in the BIOS soon after I purchased. However, now it won't accept the password that I've been using so I am locked out of my laptop. After three attempts it suggests that I use the HP Sparekey USB Recovery Key so I've not only tried using the HP Cloud Recovery media tool installer on one of my USB sticks but also the on that HP Care sent me. Neither works as the screen states, "USB Device is not found. Please insert the device." I'm stuck. My opinion is that the BIOS update wiped my admin password and the BIOS will not turn on the I/O devices until the password challenge is accepted. My laptop is registered with HP Care under my name but none of the support that I have received seem to understand what is happening despite numerous emails, chats, etc. Please help. I can provide photos of the screens if necessary. Also, I don't believe there is a MB CMOS battery on these new laptops so I can't just pop in/out to flash. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Todd

First off, Admin passwords and BIOS passwords are very different and neither is related to the other.

Second, if you already applied a BIOS password, that was stored in the Firmware of the motherboard, and we have no way at all of either getting to that or resetting it for you.  HP's policy, since the firmware would need to be reset and customers don't have the hardware to "burn" new chips, is to charge for a complete motherboard replacement -- often amounting to $200 USD or more.

Third, since the two passwords are unrelated and stored in different places, a BIOS update would have no affect at all on a Windows Admin password.

If want to discuss these further with HP, you would have to contact HP Customer Support directly -- as there is nothing we HERE can do for you about these.

To contact HP Support see the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
Step 1. Goto this page https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on: HP contact options - click on Get phone number
Case number and phone number appear.

Thanks for your quick reply. I am referring only to the BIOS password and not anything in Windows. It is called an admin password in BIOS as well so I apologize for the confusion. If it was a BIOS update that "wiped" my password then can I force it to go back to factory BIOS or is that permanently overwritten by BIOS update? Also, are you aware of any way to get the USB port to recognize the HP Recovery USB drive?

Thanks in advance,

Todd
