Hi @Rbry,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Omen 16 will only charge when it is powered off or when the lid is closed, but not while it is turned on. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check the charging status in Windows
While the laptop is on and plugged in, click the battery icon and confirm whether it shows Plugged in (not charging).
This helps determine if the system is intentionally limiting charging rather than not detecting the charger.

Review HP BIOS battery and power settings
Restart the laptop and press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
Look for Battery Health Manager, Adaptive Battery Optimizer, or Charging Limits and temporarily set them to Default or Disabled, then save and exit.

Update the BIOS and HP power drivers
Install the latest BIOS, HP System Event Utility, and chipset drivers from HP Support for your exact Omen 16 model.
Charging behavior issues often start after a firmware or Windows update.

Test with high load vs idle
With the laptop on, close all apps and let the system idle while plugged in.
If it starts charging only when idle, the system may be limiting charging due to high power draw or thermal protection.

Check for overheating or throttling
Feel for excessive heat and listen for fans running loudly when charging stops.
If temperatures are high, the system may pause charging to protect the battery.

Disable fast startup
Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do and turn off Fast Startup.
Fast Startup can interfere with power-state transitions and charging behavior.

Inspect the charger and charging port
Make sure you are using the original HP high-wattage adapter required for the Omen 16.
A weakened or lower-watt adapter can supply enough power to run the laptop but not enough to charge while it’s on.

Perform a hard reset (power drain)
Turn off the laptop, unplug the charger, and disconnect all devices.
Press and hold the power button for 20–30 seconds, then reconnect the charger and power it on.

Run HP hardware diagnostics for the battery and AC adapter
At startup, press Esc, then F2 to run diagnostics.
If the adapter or battery test shows intermittent or weak results, it points to a hardware fault.

I hope this helps.
