OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop 16-k0000 (594K2AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

So I have a omen laptop and it doesn't seem to be performing that well. I listed the specs on the title and I am wondering if there is anyway to speed it up? When I run fortnite on performance mode in a lobby there are a lot of fps drops and it is very unplayable.

Hi @XFirekensionX,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To improve the performance of your HP Omen 16 while playing Fortnite and reduce FPS drops, you can try several optimization steps. Here’s a comprehensive guide.

Update Drivers and System Software

  • Graphics Drivers: Ensure that your NVIDIA RTX 3060 drivers are up to date. You can do this through the GeForce Experience application or directly from the NVIDIA website.
  • Windows Updates: Make sure your Windows operating system is fully updated.

Optimize In-Game Settings

  • Resolution: Play at your monitor’s native resolution (1080p).
  • Graphics Settings: Set all graphics settings to low or medium to reduce the load on the GPU.
  • Performance Mode: Continue using Performance Mode in Fortnite as it’s designed to improve FPS on lower-end systems.

Adjust NVIDIA Control Panel Settings

  • Open the NVIDIA Control Panel and go to "Manage 3D settings".
  • Power Management Mode: Set it to "Prefer maximum performance".
  • Texture Filtering - Quality: Set it to "High performance".
  • Threaded Optimization: Set to "On".

Windows Performance Settings

  • Power Plan: Set your power plan to "High performance".
    • Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > High performance.
  • Game Mode: Ensure that Game Mode is enabled.
    • Go to Settings > Gaming > Game Mode and toggle it on.

System Maintenance

  • Disk Cleanup: Run Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files.
  • Defragment Your Disk (if you have an HDD; skip if you have an SSD).
  • Disable Startup Programs: Prevent unnecessary programs from running at startup.
    • Go to Task Manager > Startup tab and disable non-essential programs.

Monitor Performance

  • Temperature Monitoring: Use software like MSI Afterburner to monitor your CPU and GPU temperatures. High temperatures can cause thermal throttling.
    • If temperatures are high, consider improving cooling. Use a cooling pad, clean the fans, or ensure proper ventilation.

Overclocking (Optional)

  • Overclock GPU: Using software like MSI Afterburner, you can try overclocking your GPU for better performance. Proceed with caution and ensure you know the risks.

Reinstall Fortnite

  • Sometimes, game files can get corrupted. A fresh install of Fortnite might resolve performance issues.

Check Background Processes

  • Ensure that no heavy applications are running in the background while playing Fortnite. Use Task Manager to close unnecessary applications.

BIOS and Firmware Updates

  • Check for any BIOS or firmware updates for your laptop on the HP support website.

External Factors

  • Internet Connection: Ensure your internet connection is stable. Use a wired connection if possible for lower latency.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
