Microsoft Windows 11

Hi

I have Pavilion Gaming Laptop.

It has Insert and Print Screen under one button.

I don't know how to turn on Insert button.

Fn + Ins is not working.

Hi @AngryBird4

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

On HP Pavilion Gaming laptops, the Insert (INS) function is often combined with Print Screen (PrtSc) on the same key. Unlike older keyboards, the Insert function may not be directly accessible with Fn + key. Instead, it is usually triggered by Fn + E or by remapping through Windows/HP software, depending on the exact keyboard layout.

Why this happens

  • Modern HP gaming laptops prioritize Print Screen over Insert, since screenshots are more commonly used.
  • The Insert function is still supported in Windows, but the physical key mapping can differ by model.
  • On some Pavilion Gaming models, pressing Fn + E acts as Insert. On others, you may need to use Fn + PrtSc or remap the key.

Steps to try

Test alternate key combinations

  • Try Fn + E (common on HP Pavilion Gaming layouts).
  • Try Fn + PrtSc or Ctrl + PrtSc to see if Insert is triggered.

Use On‑Screen Keyboard

  • Press Windows + Ctrl + O to open the On‑Screen Keyboard.
  • Click Ins to confirm Insert works in your applications.

Remap the key if needed

  • If none of the combinations work, you can remap another key to Insert using free tools like PowerToys Keyboard Manager or third‑party remapping utilities.
  • This ensures you can still use Insert even if your physical keyboard doesn’t expose it directly.

Check HP documentation

  • HP provides keyboard layout diagrams for each Pavilion Gaming model. You can find them on the HP Pavilion Gaming support page.
  • Look under User Guides for your exact model number to confirm the Insert key mapping.

Note:

  • Remapping: If you remap Print Screen to Insert, you’ll lose the quick screenshot function unless you assign it elsewhere.
  • Model differences: Not all Pavilion Gaming laptops use the same keyboard layout, so the Insert shortcut may vary.
  • Software reliance: Using On‑Screen Keyboard or remapping tools is a workaround, not a hardware fix.

On your Pavilion Gaming laptop, the Insert function is not directly available with Fn + Ins. Try Fn + E first, and if that doesn’t work, use the On‑Screen Keyboard or remap another key to Insert.
