Let's be brutally honest: the HP - Compaq Business Notebook 6510b is ancient: more than 15 years old, and it can only handle up to 2 x 4GB (8GB) of DDR2 667 MHz RAM according to: https://www.compuram.biz/memory/hp-hpe/notebook/hp-compaq/series/6510b/. It is standard fitted with an Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 processor, running at 2.00 GHZ with a 35 watt TDP. The best CPU you could fit in this laptop is the Core 2 Duo T7700 running at 2.40 GHz (maybe the T7800 running at 2.60 GHz), with a 35 watt TDP. You can upgrade you HDD with a SATA 2.5-inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) internal SSD.
The specifications of this laptop are summed up here: HP Compaq 6510b Repair - iFixit, and I quote:
"This model comes with a built in Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 processor and Microsoft Windows Vista Business as operating system. It also comes with a 667 MHz memory speed and 1GB of RAM. It also has a built in DVD+RW/DVD-RAM optical drive. Its screen is 1280 x 800 (WXGA) wide. Its hard drive has a capacity of 120 GB with a spindle speed of 5400 rpm. Has a keyboard and touchpad, has a lithium ion 6-cell battery, comes with a 6 in 1 card reader. It has 4 USB slots, 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack. This model was released in 2007. The model number is RJ56DAV.
There have been recalls on Compaq 6510b notebooks. This was due to the batteries. In this specific notebook the battery contains lithium-ion. This can cause the battery to overheat which can lead to a fire hazard. Under the laptop to the left-hand side there is a sticker which gives the laptops name as well as the serial number and length of warranty. The HP Compaq 6510b, 6515b, 6710b, 6710s, 6715b, 6715s, 6720s are all models that were recalled as of May 21, 2010. Many of these models have been known to come with faulty batteries and have been deemed a fire hazard. If you own any of these models, contact HP and confirm that your battery is safe. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00911676.pdf

All right, sorry for the delay: the slot you circled is a Type I/II PC Card slot that supports 32-bit CardBus and 16-bit PC Cards.
The PC Card is a configuration for computer parallel communication peripheral interface, designed for laptop computers.
Originally introduced as PCMCIA, the PC Card standard as well as its successors like CardBus were defined and developed by the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA).
It was originally designed as a standard for memory-expansion cards for computer storage. The existence of a usable general standard for notebook peripherals led to many kinds of devices being made available based on its configurability, including network cards, modems, and hard disks.
