I'm having trouble upgrading memory from 4 GB (2 x 2 GB) DDR 3 to Crucial DDR3 16 GB (2 x 8 GB). After putting the sticks into slots 2 and 4 and powering on it goes into a BSOD loop. The first error is "Event tracing fatal error", then it restarts and gets an “IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL” error, which repeats forever. What's the problem? It's my understanding that all DDR 3 memory are largely interchangeable.
Here are my PC specs:
Motherboard: Hewlett-Packard 304Ah
Chipset: Intel Q57 (IbexPreak DO)
BIOS Version: 786H1 v01.05

I think you have a Compaq 8100 Elite SFF
If this is not correct please provide the Product ID or Model name for better assistance. Preferably the full product ID including the characters after the # symbol.
There are specific requirements for the RAM
Maximum ram is listed as 16GB and I suspect only 2gb and 4gb are allowed.
585157-001 | 4GB, PC3-10600, DDR3-1333MHz, 240-pins, non-ECC, unbuffered DIMM (Dual In-Line Memory Module) |
Get a refund on the memory and get four of the 585157-001
If the vendors has an HP sticker it will cost more. If not then be sure the 585157-001 is mentioned and returns are allowed. This seems OK but I do not see the HP sticker.
If you wish to lookup parts for an HP system use your serial number at the below site

Hi, @Wallacewynne
Your PC only supports a 4 GB memory chip in each slot.
If this memory costs less, it should work in the 8100 Elite.
I used 4 sticks of the above memory in my HP 8000 Elite CMT and my HP 8200 Elite CMT.
Works fine.
