I have an HP OMEN 16 laptop running Windows 11. The built-in keyboard is not correctly registering certain key combinations with Ctrl. Specifically, when pressing Ctrl + C, Ctrl + X, Ctrl + V, Ctrl + A, Ctrl + Z, or Ctrl + N, the system only detects the Ctrl key and not the second key — so shortcuts like copy, cut, paste, select all, undo, etc. do not execute.

Hi @JavierCS

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand how it feels especially since these are some of the most commonly used keyboard shortcuts. Since only specific Ctrl + key combinations are affected on your HP OMEN 16 while Windows detects the Ctrl key itself, the issue could be related to the keyboard driver, OMEN software, Windows settings, or the keyboard hardware. I would request you to please follow the steps:

Check if the issue occurs outside Windows

  • Restart the laptop.
  • As soon as it powers on, repeatedly press Esc to open the Startup Menu.
  • Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Run the Keyboard Test.
  • Verify whether the C, X, V, A, Z, and N keys register normally when pressed individually.

Test the shortcuts with an external USB keyboard

Connect a USB keyboard and test:

  • Ctrl + C
  • Ctrl + V
  • Ctrl + X
  • Ctrl + A
  • Ctrl + Z
  • Ctrl + N
  • If the external keyboard works correctly, the issue is likely limited to the built-in keyboard or its firmware.
  • If the external keyboard shows the same behavior, Windows or software is more likely the cause.

Check whether the keys work individually

Open Notepad and press:

  • C
  • X
  • V
  • A
  • Z
  • N

Confirm that each letter types normally without holding Ctrl.

Reinstall the keyboard driver

  • Press Win + X → Device Manager.
  • Expand Keyboards.
  • Right-click Standard PS/2 Keyboard (or HID Keyboard Device).
  • Select Uninstall device.
  • Restart the computer.

Windows will automatically reinstall the keyboard driver.

Update BIOS and chipset drivers

Install the latest BIOS, chipset, and keyboard-related drivers available for your exact HP OMEN 16 model using https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers

Take care and have an amazing day!
