"While playing a game, I experience some lag, and suddenly the cursor gets stuck. I usually lift the laptop 1 or 2 inches during gameplay. What could be the reason for this, and how can I solve the problem?
The CPU heats up to 65 degrees Celsius while playing games and sometimes reaches 70 degrees Celsius. Is this normal or considered overheating?"

Hi @BALA_NIT,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I understand how frustrating it can be when you're trying to enjoy a game and your laptop starts lagging or the cursor gets stuck. Let’s delve into what might be causing this and work on solutions.
- Does the lag only happen during specific games or across all games, regardless of their intensity?
- Have you noticed if the issue worsens after extended gameplay or during moments of high CPU/GPU usage?
- When you lift the laptop, is it to improve airflow or due to another reason, such as discomfort or habit?
Let's try these steps.
Check and Optimize Cooling
- Temperature Range: A CPU temperature of 65-70°C during gaming is generally within safe limits for most laptops. However, lifting the laptop might indicate potential airflow or thermal throttling issues.
- Ensure that your laptop’s vents are unobstructed. Use a cooling pad to improve airflow and reduce heat buildup.
Update Drivers and Software
- Update your GPU driver from the NVIDIA or AMD website.
- Check for Windows updates and install any pending updates.
- Update the game to its latest version to ensure compatibility with the hardware.
Adjust Graphics Settings
- Lower the in-game graphics settings (e.g., resolution, texture quality, and shadows).
- Disable background applications consuming resources by opening Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and ending unnecessary processes.
Inspect Power Settings
- Ensure the laptop is set to High Performance in the Power Options.
- Connect the laptop to a power source during gaming, as some models throttle performance on battery power.
Run Hardware Diagnostics
- Use HP’s built-in hardware diagnostic tools (press F2 on startup) to test the cooling system and hardware.
- Check the hard drive or SSD for potential issues that might cause lag.
If the problem persists after trying these steps, overheating could be causing performance throttling.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
