Laptop Constantly Freezing after Boot

After adding a new ssd (samsung970evoplus) my victus 16z-e000 is now freezing every time im using it after booting. For example: It froze after i tried opening Spotify after turning on. Eventually it shows BSOD error. But its not happening when I use it plugged in. Works just fine. Freezes only on battery power.

Hi @Starship_42,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems that the issue could be related to power management settings, drivers, or firmware compatibility following the installation of the new SSD. Since the laptop works fine when plugged in but freezes on battery power, here are a few things to try.

Update SSD Firmware and Drivers

  • Ensure that your Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD has the latest firmware installed. Samsung provides a utility called Samsung Magician to check for updates and optimize SSD performance.
  • Also, ensure that your system drivers, especially the storage controller and chipset drivers, are up to date.

Check Power Settings

  • It could be related to power settings or power plan conflicts after installing the SSD.
  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options and ensure that the power plan is set to Balanced.
  • Check advanced power settings and make sure settings related to the SSD (such as hard disk idle time) are appropriate for battery usage.

Disable Link State Power Management

  • Sometimes Link State Power Management, which controls power to PCIe devices, can cause issues when using an SSD.
  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings.
  • Look for PCI Express > Link State Power Management and set it to Off for both "On battery" and "Plugged in."

Check BIOS Settings

  • Ensure that the SSD is properly configured in the BIOS. Sometimes settings such as AHCI mode or power saving options in the BIOS can affect SSD performance.
  • Also, check for a BIOS update for your HP Victus 16, as this may resolve compatibility issues with the SSD.

Run Diagnostics

  • Use the built-in diagnostics in your HP laptop to check for hardware issues.
  • Restart the laptop, press F2 during boot, and run the HP Hardware Diagnostics to ensure no other hardware is faulty.

Check for Battery-Related Issues

  • It might be related to how the laptop is managing power on battery. If the battery isn't performing optimally or providing stable voltage under load (with the new SSD), that could cause freezing.
  • Consider running a battery health check or try using a different battery if possible to rule this out.

Reinstall Windows Power Plan Settings

  • Corrupt power plan settings can sometimes cause issues. You can reset these by opening Command Prompt as an administrator and typing:

powercfg -restoredefaultschemes

  • Then restart the laptop and test.

Check for BSOD Error Logs

  • Check the Event Viewer for any specific error codes related to the BSOD to help identify the exact cause.
  • Navigate to Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and look for critical errors related to the freezing and BSOD.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
