Hi everyone,

I recently started having a weird issue with my laptop. My games suddenly started running at very low FPS, and some games wouldn’t even launch. After checking around a bit, I noticed that my graphics driver wasn’t even showing up in Device Manager.

The strange part is that the GPU comes back if I keep holding the power button while the laptop is off and the power cable is unplugged. After doing that and turning the laptop back on, the GPU shows up again and everything works normally for a while.

But if I unplug the charger while using the laptop, Windows immediately crashes and restarts. It shows errors related to DXG (something like DXGG_XXXX) and sometimes mentions something related to the solid-state error.

I already tried uninstalling both the Intel and Nvidia drivers and reinstalling the latest versions, but the issue still happens. I also disabled Link State Power Management in the power settings, but that didn’t help either.

Right now, the only way I can temporarily fix it is by doing the long power button hold with the charger disconnected, which is pretty inconvenient.

Has anyone run into something like this before or knows what might be causing it?

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks.

I understand your HP Pavilion Gaming laptop GPU disappearing and crashing with DXG errors when switching to battery. Let’s go through a few checks.

Before we proceed:
Does this happen immediately when you unplug the charger, even if no game is running?

Meanwhile, you can follow these steps:

Step 1: Check Battery Health

  • Shut down the laptop.
  • Turn it on and repeatedly tap F2.
  • Open HP Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Go to Component Tests > Power > Battery.
  • Run the Battery Test.

If the battery shows Weak or Replace, unstable power delivery can cause GPU crashes when switching to battery.

Step 2: Reset BIOS to Defaults

  • Restart the laptop.
  • Tap F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  • Press F9 to Load Setup Defaults.
  • Confirm and press F10 to Save and Exit.
  • This clears any power or PCIe configuration conflicts.

Step 3: Disable Hybrid Graphics (If Option Exists)

  • Enter BIOS (F10).
  • Look under Advanced or Graphics settings.
  • If there is an option for Hybrid Graphics or Switchable Graphics, disable it temporarily.
  • Save and exit.
  • This forces the system to use a single graphics mode.

Step 4: Clean Install Nvidia Driver (Using DDU)

  • Download Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).
  • Boot into Safe Mode.
  • Run DDU and remove Nvidia drivers completely.
  • Restart normally.
  • Install the Nvidia driver from HP’s support page for your exact model (not Nvidia website).
  • Use the HP-provided driver first to test stability.

Step 5: Check Event Viewer for PCIe Errors

  • Right-click Start and open Event Viewer.
  • Go to Windows Logs > System.
  • Look for errors related to PCI Express or nvlddmkm.

If the GPU disappears from Device Manager and only returns after a full power discharge (holding power button unplugged), that indicates the GPU or PCIe controller is not reinitializing correctly after power state changes.

Combined with:

  • Instant crash when unplugging
  • DXG kernel errors
  • GPU vanishing
  • Works temporarily after full power drain

This strongly suggests either:

  • Failing battery causing unstable voltage transition
  • Power delivery issue on the motherboard
  • Failing Nvidia GPU hardware

If the battery test fails, replace the battery first.
If the battery passes but crashes continue when unplugging, this points to motherboard-level power regulation affecting the GPU.
