We purchased this for my high school aged daughter who has migraines and needs a laptop that doesn’t flicker and has a large display. We’ve had it just shy of 2 years and it’s really “acting up” - green and black glitches, switches or closes tabs, moves document when typing, crashes frequently. Anyone experience this?

Hello,
We purchased this laptop for my high school–aged daughter, who suffers from migraines and needed a large, flicker-free display. It worked well at first, but after almost two years of use, it has started acting up. The screen shows green and black glitches, tabs switch or close on their own, documents move while typing, and the system crashes frequently. It’s been really frustrating, and we’re wondering if anyone else has experienced similar issues.

Hi @kalex860
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thank you for sharing the context so clearly. It’s especially important that the laptop remains visually stable and responsive given your daughter’s sensitivity to flicker.
The symptoms you're seeing—screen glitches, erratic tab behavior, and frequent crashes—suggest a possible graphics driver conflict, thermal instability, or hardware degradation.
You’ve done well to notice the patterns, and we’ll focus on restoring smooth, reliable operation.
Step-by-step actions to troubleshoot and stabilize your HP OMEN 16-wd0063dx
1. Update graphics drivers (Intel + NVIDIA)
- Open Device Manager (Windows + X > Device Manager).
- Expand Display adapters and right-click both Intel and NVIDIA entries.
- Select Update driver > Search automatically.
- Alternatively, use HP Support Assistant to install the latest drivers tailored to your model.
2. Install latest BIOS and firmware
- Visit the official HP driver page:
HP OMEN 16-wd0063dx Drivers and Software - Select your Windows version and download the latest BIOS, firmware, and chipset updates.
- Restart after installation.
3. Run HP UEFI diagnostics
- Restart the laptop and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
- Press F2 to launch HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
- Run System Tests > Extensive Test (especially graphics and memory).
- This will help detect any failing components.
4. Check for thermal throttling or overheating
- Download OMEN Gaming Hub and open System Vitals.
- Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures. If they exceed 90°C during normal use, clean the vents and consider using a cooling pad.
- You can also adjust Performance Control to Balanced or Quiet mode to reduce heat output.
5. Disable unnecessary background apps
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check the Startup tab.
- Disable any non-essential apps that may be causing instability.
6. Perform a clean boot
- Type msconfig in Windows search > open System Configuration.
- Under Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
- Go to Startup > Open Task Manager > disable all items.
- Restart and observe system behavior.
If the screen still flickers or crashes persist after these steps, let me know whether the issues occur during specific tasks (e.g., video playback, typing, gaming) or randomly.
You're doing everything right—and we’ll work together to bring back a smooth, flicker-free experience that supports your daughter’s needs.
