My laptop keeps on entering hibernation mode when I play videogames. I've cleaned out my fans, checked temperatures, checked battery health and checked battery actions. Nothing out of the ordinary for any of those. It's an extremely annoying problem and I didn't have it previously. How do I fix this?

Hi @CasualUser226,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  1. When did this issue start was it after a Windows update, driver update, or BIOS update?
  2. Are you using battery power, plugged in, or does it happen in both scenarios?
  3. Do you notice any error messages, blue screens, or sudden shutdowns before the hibernation?
  4. Which laptop model and Windows version are you running?

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check Power & Sleep Settings:
    • Go to Settings → System → Power & battery → Additional power settings → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings.
    • Look under Sleep → Hibernate after and make sure it’s set to a reasonable time or “Never” while plugged in.
  2. Check Event Viewer:
    • Press Win + X → Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System.
    • Look for Kernel-Power or Power-Troubleshooter entries around the time your laptop hibernates. This can indicate if it’s a system-triggered hibernation or a hardware/power issue.
  3. Disable Automatic Hibernation Temporarily:
    • Open Command Prompt as Admin and run:
    • powercfg /h off
    • This will disable hibernation and let you test if the issue stops.
  4. Update Drivers & BIOS:
    • Ensure your graphics drivers, chipset drivers, and BIOS are up to date from HP’s support page. Some sudden hibernation issues are caused by driver conflicts during gaming.
  5. Check for Hybrid Sleep / Battery Issues:
    • In the same advanced power settings, disable Hybrid Sleep.

I hope this helps
