Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution

Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So my laptop died a while back because I had forgotten my charger while traveling. When I came back home and plugged it in to charge it only flashed the orange light and went out like it received the charge but cant hold it and everytime I click the power button a white light on the charger port would flash but nothing else would happen. Is my battery or the motherboard the problem?

@Dystroyer300,

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience on the HP forum, you could also visit our HP Forums Guide for First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I see from your post that you are having issues with the HP Notebook won't turn on anymore. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

  • Have you tried to charge it for some time (couple of hours) and check if that works?
  • Are you using the original charger that came with the PC or a different one?
  • Do you hear the fan spinning inside the laptop when you try to power it on?
  • Does it power on using only the battery? (Keep the charger disconnected).
  • Did you try a different adapter and power cord and check if the notebook powers on?

It looks like a hardware issue with the notebook and it may need to be repaired. For now, try these steps: HP Notebook PCs - Computer Does Not Start (Windows 10)

  • Perform all the relevant steps by following the guided troubleshooter link:
  • Also, check with a local technician like Best Buy or Staples or any local technician and try and get hold of a power cord and a charger and connect it to the computer.
  • Don't buy this power cord and charger. It is only to check if the computer powers on or not. If it does not after trying 2 chargers, then the charger is not faulty. The computer's power port or motherboard is faulty and needs to be repaired.
  • I am being honest about it here by keeping your best interest in mind without beating around the bush.

If you have followed the steps suggested and still having the issue,

I will share you a private message with details. Please watch your inbox for more information.

Let me know if this helps!

Have a great day ahead! 🙂

Hi,  I had this problem a month ago and nobody knew how to fix it.  I went to 2 different Best Buy stores and they were useless.  It didnt start at all and just gave some flashes from the charging port.  My charger and battery were fine after testing them.  The problem was that everyone said the reset procedure was to hold the power putton for 15 to 30 seconds.  Even HP said to do this.  Its wrong and doesnt work.  I believe I held that button for a full minute with the battery in and it was plugged into the wall and it came back to life.
