OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-xd0000 (758R2AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

The latest Omen Gaming hub is always keeping my dedicated Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU always active, even if the laptop is idle or unplugged and is on battery. The dedicated GPU just won't turn off.

This is resulting in heavy battery drain when the laptop is on battery power, even when it is idle.

How do I fix this issue and stop the usage of the dedicated GPU when it is not being used?

Note: On uninstalling Omen Gaming Hub, the problem automatically goes away. It seems that the Gaming Hub driver has something in it that is making the dedicated GPU run indefinitely.

Hi @RayoViBE,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the Omen Gaming Hub or its associated drivers are causing the Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU to remain active even when it is not needed, leading to unnecessary battery drain. Here are a few steps to try and resolve the issue.

Update Omen Gaming Hub and GPU Drivers

Ensure that both your Omen Gaming Hub and Nvidia GPU drivers are up-to-date:

  • Open the Omen Gaming Hub and check for any updates under the settings or about tab.
  • For your GPU, you can update drivers from the Nvidia GeForce Experience app or download the latest drivers directly from the Nvidia website.

Sometimes, newer versions of drivers or software can resolve issues like this.

Power Management Settings in Nvidia Control Panel

You can set the preferred GPU for different applications manually in the Nvidia Control Panel to make sure the system uses the integrated GPU (iGPU) when the laptop is running on battery:

  • Right-click on your desktop and select Nvidia Control Panel.
  • Go to Manage 3D settings > Global Settings.
  • Under the Preferred graphics processor, select Integrated graphics (this is your iGPU).
  • Additionally, check the Power Management Mode under Program Settings and set it to Optimal power to reduce GPU power usage.

Windows Power Settings

Adjusting your Windows Power Plan to a more power-saving configuration may help:

  • Open Control Panel > Power Options.
  • Select Power Saver or configure a Balanced plan with a focus on battery conservation.
  • Under Advanced settings, make sure that the GPU is set to power down when not in use.

Disable Dedicated GPU in Device Manager (Temporary Solution)

If the above steps don't resolve it, you can try disabling the dedicated GPU when on battery (though this may limit gaming performance when needed):

  • Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand the Display adapters section.
  • Right-click on the Nvidia RTX 4060 and select Disable device.
  • This will force the laptop to use the integrated graphics, but you will need to manually enable the GPU for gaming sessions.

Check Omen Gaming Hub Settings

If the Omen Gaming Hub is the primary cause of the issue, you can try disabling any settings in the hub that manage power or GPU usage. Look for options related to GPU switching, power management, or game mode and disable them if possible.

Reinstall Omen Gaming Hub (without GPU Driver Installation)

If uninstalling Omen Gaming Hub resolves the issue, but you still want to use it, you could try reinstalling it without installing the driver components that manage the GPU. This may prevent the Hub from keeping the GPU active unnecessarily.

  • When reinstalling, select Custom Install and ensure that you do not install any optional components related to GPU control.

BIOS Update/Settings

Some laptops have options in BIOS to control GPU behavior. Check if your BIOS has settings related to GPU switching (iGPU vs. dGPU). You can try updating the BIOS or configuring it to always prioritize the integrated GPU unless specifically needed.

By trying these methods, you should be able to stop the dedicated GPU from running indefinitely and reduce battery drain when on battery power.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Don't you think that is a LOT that you are asking me to do to enjoy using my laptop?

Besides, I honestly think that there is some bug in your latest Omen Gaming Hub software or the Omen Gaming SDK.

Because when I uninstall the Omen Gaming Hub, all problems get resolved and I don't face any issues any more.

Please have a look at your app and fix it because at the moment it is almost unusable to operate in battery mode. The battery drains very fast because the discrete GPU stays inactive due to your software.
