Product name : HP OMEN Gaming Laptop 16
Specs: Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060, AMD Ryzen 7 6800H, 8 cores, 16 logical processors, 16 gb RAM.
Hi. I have a problem with the performance on my laptop when unplugged. I bought this laptop around a month ago and this problem was there since I bought it. As far as I know, it happens on every game I play. Whenever I unplug the charger from the laptop, my fps drops to 10 and below and goes back up after a few seconds. It's inconsistent and happens every 2 mins or so and the audio becomes grainy when it happens. One more thing I noticed was that when I unplug my charger in Fortnite, my GPU usage sky rockets to 100% (only in Fortnite).
I've tried troubleshooting in the following ways:
Changing my battery plan to performance (through control panel and Nvidia control panel)
Undervolting GPU
Updating drivers
Please help in any way you can.

Hi @Lilsplash ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your laptop's performance is being significantly throttled when it is running on battery power. This is a common issue with gaming laptops to conserve battery life and prevent overheating.
Here are some steps you can take to address this problem:
Adjust Power Settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings.
- Select the High performance power plan.
- Click on Change plan settings next to the High performance plan.
- Click on Change advanced power settings.
- Expand the Processor power management section, then expand Maximum processor state and set both On battery and Plugged in to 100%.
- Expand Graphics settings (or similar, depending on your system) and ensure the settings are optimized for performance.
Check HP Command Center:
- Open the HP Command Center app.
- Switch to the Performance mode, which may help in optimizing performance when on battery power.
Update BIOS and Firmware:
- Visit the HP Support website and ensure your BIOS and firmware are up-to-date. Sometimes, performance issues can be resolved through updates that optimize power management.
NVIDIA Control Panel Settings:
- Right-click on your desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Go to Manage 3D settings.
- Under the Global Settings tab, set the Power management mode to Prefer maximum performance.
- Apply the changes.
Battery Boost Settings:
- Open the GeForce Experience application.
- Go to Settings > Games and turn off Battery Boost if it is enabled.
- Alternatively, adjust the Battery Boost settings to see if it improves performance.
Check AMD Power Management Settings:
- Open the AMD Radeon Software app.
- Go to Settings > Graphics > Power and ensure the power management settings are optimized for performance.
Limit Background Processes:
- When gaming on battery, ensure that unnecessary background processes and applications are closed to free up system resources.
Battery Health Check:
- Run a battery health check to ensure that the battery itself is not causing the issue. Open the HP Support Assistant and run a battery test.
