OMEN by HP 15-dc1002tx
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi guys,

A year ago i bought a used HP Omen 15 (specifically HP Omen 15-dc1002tx) with Windows 11 running on it. The main issue is that sometimes (and lately most of the time) when i try to shut it down the screen will go black but the keyboard will still remain lit and the fans will still go. This means i have to long press the power button each time i need to shut it down and it gets really frustrating (or let the battery go out)

Here are some fixes i tried that yielded no results:
-disabling Fast Startup and Hibernation
-reinstalling Windows
-unchecked the 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' in the Power Management tab for the usb controllers in Device Manager
-edited the power plan so that the power savings to the pcie express is set to off
-tried disabling the battery devices in Device Manager
-i think there was one more but i cant remember it was something very niche either way
-tried letting the laptop cool after loads (though this has worked a bunch of times but not always)
-let in the partially shut down state for 5 hours to see if something would happen
-the Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor show that Windows was not properly shut down but not always, but at one point i did get a bunch of a Live Event ID 141 regarding nvlddmkm.sys but that hasn't happened in like 9 months so idk
-tried removing the battery and performing a hardware reset

I did try to boot off a usb flash drive with Ubuntu on it and it actually shut down even after some mild usage but i can't tell if it's consistent or not.

All my drivers are up to date including Bios. I dont know if this is a hardware issue or windows issue because other than not shutting down properly, the laptop works and performs well. It is also worth mentioning that this issue arrises after the machine has done some sort of load. For example, when i open the laptop just for watching youtube, there's a high chance it will shut down normally (though it happened to also not completely shut down even after doing menial task on it for the duration of runtime), but when i try to play a game the laptop gets hot and loud and if i try to shut it down it will fail most of the time.

my specs are:
-Intel Core I5 8300H
-Nvidia RTX 2060
-16gb of RAM (i added a mismatched frequency 8gb stick but my problem was already present way before this 'upgrade')

One of your devices doesn't like to be shut down.

Run the energy and sleep study and see what recommendations are made.  Let me know if you find something unusual show up

Energy Report A list of possible problems ranked as Errors, Warnings, or Informational
Sleep Study The history of sleep going back several days

These report are obtained by using the Administrators command prompt.
Copy and paste the following into the command prompt window for the energy report.

powercfg /energy
.\energy-report.html

Note the number of errors and warnings.

Copy and paste the following commands into the same window to get sleep history

powercfg /SleepStudy
.\SleepStudy-report.html

Some thoughts by Microsoft

You can probably do a factory restore from the HP cloud but be sure to backup your files first.

Cloud recovery provides all the custom HP drivers.
Go to the below site and enter your product ID including the 3 characters after the # character
If you have cloud recovery you can restore your system using a 32gb flash.
It may take an hour or more to create the recovery USB.

Alternately, download from the MS windows store

These were the errors i got from the energy report. It is curious because i remember that one of the Realtek drivers would not shut down a while back, even after i intervened to stop those drivers they would just start back up again but i figured it couldnt be that

The Sleep Study report showed only one Abnormal Shutdown and the rest seemed fine which is weird because my laptop shut down normally a total of 4/12 times yesterday

Try this Realtek audio driver dated March 2024

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp151001-151500/sp151180.exe

I found it here

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-envy-x360-14-inch-2-in-1-laptop-pc-14-fa0000/model/210200767...

There is a discussion here of the problem of Realtek keeping the desktop from sleeping.  You could try the

powercfg -requests

and use your VEN and DEV string (if shown) in the requestoverride.

Thanks for the replies!

Unfortunately, i tried updating my Realtek drivers, overriding the Realtek driver in powercfg (with no success)

I did also reset the power plan to default which kinda worked?
It shut down normally twice, under load and just idling, but the third time i tried to test the laptop under load to really see if it was fixed it still partially shut down and i had to long press the power button. Upon starting the machine again i was greeted by a CMOS 502 Bios error. After the subsequent restart, i got a Unsupported HP Battery error from the Bios which means im going to have to drain the battery to 0 for this error to go away.

I checked the Reliability Monitor and i had 3 of these critical errors

UPDATE: After shutting it down i tried to start the machine (unplugged) and pressing the button would do nothing until i plugged it back in. I got the Unsupported HP Battery error message and then it boot-looped two times.
Checking the Reliability Monitor yielded a LiveKernelEvent Code 144 in regards to nvlddmkm.sys Turing.
This laptop has so many issues i just dont know what to do anymore
Maybe downgrading to Windows 10 for better support? Searching for this exact model on the HP driver finder shows absolutely nothing, like this laptop model never existed.

You can use HP's cloud restore to do a factor reset.  It would be windows 10 but an in-place upgrade to 11 should be OK.

Go to the below site and enter your product ID including the 3 characters after the # character

Did you do a clean upgrade to 11 or in-place?  A clean upgrade might get the wrong drivers unlike an in-place.

When i bought the laptop, Windows 11 was already installed and i just used the "Reset this PC" option from the settings so i can't really tell what happened to it beforehand.
I'm gonna do as you suggest and get a 32gb usb drive and do a cloud recovery. Hopefully it can rectify some of the things wrong with the machine.
Thanks for all the suggestions and help! I'll get back with an update reply once i get a flash drive to reset everything.
