Victus by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-d0000 (2V8U5AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Please I need some help, my HP Victus 16-D0023DX is always crashing in games and applications.

The crash happens with applications and games using the Nvidia GPU. The laptop most of the time crashes to the desktop or infrequently crashes to BSOD or direct to reboot, It has been getting more frequent over the past few weeks.

I have tried all sorts of fixes including:

1. upgrading to the latest drivers on Nvidia's website.

2. downgrading to the driver version on the HP support site.

3. uninstalling the driver with DDU in safe mode and reinstalling the drivers in both  1. and 2.  above.

4. Underclocking the GPU using MSI afterburner

5. Resetting the laptop through Windows and using external an USB drive.

6. running games and apps at lower settings and framerates.

7. removing all overlays.

The error messages I get when I check the event viewer are of the type nvlddmkm.sys with event code 153 (most frequent),14, 13 0r 0.

I normally check the temperature of the GPU and CPU using the omen gaming hub and frequently use the laptop with an external monitor, please any help, insight or solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @willis45,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The crashes you're experiencing with your HP Victus 16 while using the NVIDIA GPU are frustrating, but they provide valuable diagnostic clues. Here’s a structured approach to troubleshoot and resolve the issue based on your symptoms and efforts so far.

Hardware Diagnostics

Run HP's UEFI Diagnostics:

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly until the startup menu appears.
  • Select System Diagnostics and run extensive tests on the GPU, memory, and CPU to rule out hardware failure.
  • If errors are found, they might indicate a hardware issue requiring repair or replacement.

Check GPU Stability:

  • Use tools like FurMark to stress-test the GPU. Monitor for crashes during the test.
  • Check the GPU's power delivery—fluctuations can cause instability.

Investigate Power Supply Issues

Ensure Sufficient Power:

  • Ensure you're using the original HP charger. Faulty or underpowered chargers can cause instability under load.
  • If using a power strip or adapter, connect the charger directly to the wall socket.

Battery Health Check:

  • Run a battery health test via the HP Support Assistant or System Diagnostics to ensure stable power delivery.

Thermal Management

Monitor Thermals:

  • High temperatures can lead to crashes. Use the Omen Gaming Hub or HWMonitor to track temperatures under load.
  • Clean the vents and fans to ensure proper airflow.
  • Consider using a cooling pad for additional thermal relief.

Repaste the GPU/CPU (if comfortable or under warranty):

  • Old or degraded thermal paste can cause thermal throttling and crashes. Have a technician repaste the GPU and CPU if necessary.

Software Conflicts

Disable Windows Fast Startup:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup and save changes.

Verify Background Apps:

  • Disable unnecessary startup programs and background processes to reduce resource conflicts.

Adjust Power Settings:

  • Use NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings and set "Power Management Mode" to Prefer Maximum Performance for affected applications.

Advanced GPU Driver Troubleshooting

Use Older Stable Driver:

  • Roll back to a known stable driver version (e.g., older versions that worked previously).
  • Use DDU in Safe Mode to remove existing drivers entirely before installation.

Check NVIDIA Logs:

  • NVIDIA drivers often log details in C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles. Examine these logs for more specifics on the crashes.

Verify System Integrity

Run System File Checker and DISM:

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:

sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

  • This repairs corrupted system files that could interfere with GPU drivers.

Update BIOS/UEFI:

  • Check the HP support site for the latest BIOS version for your model. Updating the BIOS can resolve compatibility issues.

Test Without External Monitor

  • Disconnect the external monitor and use only the laptop's display. If the crashes stop, the issue may be related to how the external monitor interfaces with the NVIDIA GPU.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello, sorry for the late follow-up. I tried the solutions you stated in the post and I also discovered that the crashes mostly happen in games when the PC is set to performance mode in the Omen gaming hub application and less frequent in normal mode, but no crashes for the past few days in quiet mode. While for applications I still get crashes from time to time when using Optix rendering in Blender but not as frequently as using performance mode.

Also using features like Nvidia fast sync causes crashes too.
