Hello,

I’ve been struggling with this issue for the past two days.
My laptop suddenly became locked at 60Hz, even though it has always been running at 144Hz before.

I tried everything possible:

  • Installed a fresh version of Windows

  • Updated all GPU drivers

  • Completely removed and reinstalled the graphics drivers

  • Used HP Cloud Recovery and let it fully reset the system

  • Updated the BIOS

  • Tried changing settings through NVIDIA Control Panel, with no success

Nothing worked.

My laptop is:

  • HP Victus 15-faX000

  • CPU: Intel Core i5 (12th Gen)

  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3050

  • RAM: 16 GB

I did not change anything before this happened.
The system now detects the internal display as 60Hz, even though it is supposed to be a 144Hz display.

I would appreciate your help in identifying the cause of this issue and confirming the original factory display specifications.

Thank you.

Hi @Treatak

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how concerning it is when your display suddenly locks at 60Hz, especially since you’ve already taken extensive steps such as reinstalling Windows, updating drivers, and resetting the system.

Thank you for the effort you’ve put in so far—it shows great diligence. Let’s go through a focused set of checks that can help restore the 144Hz capability:

Steps to Restore 144Hz on HP Victus 15-faX000

Confirm Display Specifications

  • The HP Victus 15-faX000 series is offered with different panel options. Some configurations ship with a 60Hz panel, while others include a 144Hz panel.
  • You can verify your exact configuration by checking the product specifications here:
    HP Victus 15-faX000 Product Specifications

Check Windows Display Settings

  • Right-click on the desktop → Display settingsAdvanced display settings.
  • Under “Choose a refresh rate,” ensure 144Hz is listed. If only 60Hz appears, Windows is not detecting the high-refresh panel.

Update Graphics Drivers from HP

  • Even if NVIDIA drivers are installed, please ensure you have the latest drivers from HP’s support page for your model:
HP Victus 15-faX000 Drivers and Downloads
  • Install both Intel graphics and NVIDIA drivers, as the internal display uses hybrid graphics.

Check NVIDIA Control Panel

  • Open NVIDIA Control PanelChange resolution.
  • Select the internal display and check if 144Hz is available under refresh rates.
  • If missing, it indicates the system is not recognizing the 144Hz panel.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart the laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI).
  • Run the Display Test to confirm whether the panel is functioning correctly.
  • Guide: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Support

BIOS Reset

  • Enter BIOS by pressing F10 at startup.
  • Load Setup Defaults and save.
  • This ensures no custom settings are interfering with display detection.

If after these steps the system continues to show only 60Hz, it suggests either:

  • The panel is being misidentified by the system, or
  • The panel hardware is no longer reporting its 144Hz capability.
