I've tried to disable the igpu (didn't work) delete both display adapter files in the device manager tab (didn't work) and also set the battery to performance and tired the applications that windows designated as high performance (still runs on Igpu) so what else could i do to be able to use my discrete gpu and not be forced to run everything on the onboard graphics

Hi @x071,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing difficulty in getting your laptop to use the discrete GPU instead of the integrated GPU. Here are a few additional steps you can try to resolve this issue:

  • Update GPU Drivers: Ensure that both your integrated GPU (usually Intel HD Graphics) and discrete GPU (NVIDIA or AMD) drivers are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause conflicts.
  • BIOS Settings: Check your laptop's BIOS settings to see if there is an option to prioritize the discrete GPU over the integrated one. Sometimes, there are settings related to graphics or GPU selection that can be adjusted in the BIOS.
  • Power Settings: In Windows, go to "Power Options" and make sure you're using a power plan that allows for high-performance graphics. Sometimes, the power plan can restrict the use of discrete GPUs to conserve battery life.
  • NVIDIA/AMD Control Panel: If you have an NVIDIA GPU, open the NVIDIA Control Panel (or AMD equivalent for AMD GPUs) and check the settings there. Look for options related to GPU selection and ensure that the discrete GPU is set as the preferred graphics processor globally or for specific applications.
  • Device Manager: In Device Manager, under "Display adapters," try disabling the integrated GPU (Intel HD Graphics) and then restart your computer. This forces Windows to use the discrete GPU. However, this method may not always work smoothly due to system configurations.
  • Application Settings: Some applications allow you to choose which GPU to use for rendering. Check the graphics settings within the specific applications/games you want to run with the discrete GPU and ensure it's selected.
  • Check GPU Activity: Use software like GPU-Z or Task Manager (Performance tab > GPU) to monitor GPU activity. This can help you confirm which GPU is being used by default and troubleshoot further.
  • Reinstall GPU Drivers: If updating didn't help, consider uninstalling both integrated and discrete GPU drivers completely from Device Manager, and then reinstalling them from scratch.

I hope this helps.
