Purchased a new HP Laptop Omnibook and had a lot of saved information on the Laptop I was using an HP Omen Laptop. I have all of the information, saved files on the new laptop but I want to sell the used laptop and don't want the buyer to use my Microsoft PIN or Picture. Is there a way to create a new logon ID on the old laptop so my information is secure and cannot be seen on the old la[top?

Need Help PLEASE

Jerry

Hi @JerryY,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand you would like to ensure your personal information is secure and not accessible to the buyer, you should perform a factory reset to remove all personal data, restore the laptop to its original settings, and prepare it for a new user. I would request you to please follow the below steps.

Back Up Important Data:

  • Before resetting the laptop, ensure all important files and data are backed up to an external drive, cloud storage, or your new HP Omnibook laptop.

Sign Out of All Accounts:

  • Log out of all accounts, including your Microsoft account. This ensures that the account information is erased during the reset.

Perform a Factory Reset:

  • Windows 10/11:
  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  • Under "Reset this PC," click Get started.
  • Choose Remove everything to ensure all personal data is erased.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset process.

Reinstall Windows:

  • After a factory reset, Windows is typically reinstalled automatically. However, if necessary, you can reinstall Windows using a bootable USB drive and Windows installation media tool available on HP's website or Microsoft.

Create a New User Account:

  • If you want to set up the laptop for the new user, you can create a local account for them post-reset, or simply leave the laptop for them to set up as new.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Boy this was scary. When I went to settings >I did not have an "update & security". I only have "Privacy & Security" and when I click that there is no "Recovery" there. I searched for "reset" in settings it did find "reset this PC"  but when clicked it did got to a process to reset the PC, I clicked it and made several choices and clicked to start but it did not work...I think it tried and said it would restart but it just did not work. So PC is not reset.

I'll really appreciate any additional help.

I don't suppose we could share the screen/PC and let you have a look?

Thanks

Gerald

Hi @JerryY,

Thank you for responding.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble resetting your used HP laptop.

Restart into Recovery Mode:

  • Turn off your laptop completely.
  • Turn it back on and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  • Press F11 to open System Recovery options.

Access Troubleshoot Options:

  • Select the Troubleshoot option from the menu.
  • Choose Reset this PC.

Select Reset Option:

  • You will have options to "Keep my files" or "Remove everything". Choose based on whether you want to retain your personal files.
  • Follow the prompts to complete the reset process. This may take some time.

Alternative Boot Method:

  • If the F11 key does not work, you can create a Windows 10 installation media on a USB drive using another computer:
    • Download the Windows Media Creation Tool and follow the instructions to create a bootable USB.
    • Boot the laptop from this USB drive by changing the boot order in BIOS (accessed by pressing F10 during startup).

Complete the Reset:

  • Once booted from the installation media, select Repair your computer.
  • Choose Troubleshoot, then Reset this PC, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Take care and have an amazing day!
